The Perfect Home Is A Myth

The Perfect Home Is A Myth

One of the first steps I take when working with Alexandria Louisiana area home buyers is the buyer consultation. At some point in this meeting the prospective buyer will reference their "perfect home". Here are some talking points I use to help the would be buyers flesh out the perfect home myth.

1) Regardless of price point, no home is "perfect"-- I sold a Condo this year for north of 1.5 million bucks. The laundry room was so small even a juvenile snake would have a struggle stretching out..

2) Compare the home to others in the same price range, not HGTV--Do other homes at your price point boast one bathroom? If so, that 1.5 bathroom is actually a bonus not a demerit. Life is all about perspective!

3) Focus on 1-2 core "musts" not 12--Perhaps your growing family MUST have a full size second bathroom. If that's the winner winner chicken dinner great. But then don't throw a fit because the tile in the kitchen is outdated.

4) The house is not the only thing that makes a home--I have bought and sold personal homes pretty much my entire adult life. My favorite had a postage stamp yard and tile straight out of the  sale rack from the box store. But it's where I learned how to be a Dad. Okay, so 25 years later I'm still trying to perfect that. But it gets easier with grandkids (and they are MUCH more fun).

Find the home that checks your important boxes for this life chapter. Will this be your forever home? Likely not. Will this less than perfect house become a home? You bet!

Good morning Doug. Some will say they found the perfect home. it might be temporarily and then quickly it could be better. The template of a perfect home changes with the passage of time. Enjoy your day.

Doug Rogers, your perspective on the "perfect home" myth is refreshing! It's all about finding a home that fits your life chapter, not a flawless one. Thanks for keeping buyers grounded and motivated! 🌟 #StayMotivated #HomeSweetHome 🏡

Hello Doug - thanks to the opening comment from Michael Elliott, I am remembering seeing the movie, Pleasantville. While I know there is at least one city that exists by that name, the reality of perfect "anything" is definitely a myth.

Hi Doug- I love this post. Our first home in FL was a joke. When we viewed it the first time, we got in our car and laughed. But it did end up being the perfect home for us. Our neighbors ended up being like family, we had a 75 foot seawall and were a block from the intracoastal. I loved it.

Good morning Doug,

I'm so glad that Kathy Streib featured your post in her Sunday Series, as somehow I missed it! I've always said there is not perfect home, if you think you've found it it's short lived. Life brings changes and your wants, needs and desires change. The important thing is to find the right community and then find your home.

I have been saddened and disappointed in the past when a client finds an excellent home...one they should write an offer for...but they want to continue to see if "maybe something better is out there". They, too, are disappointed when they find that home was their best choice but while they were looking for the "perfect" home, someone else bought the home they should have bought.
