Protect Your Home: Vacant Property Scams

Are you planning a vacation? If so, you might want to keep an eye on your property. There has been a rise in scammers, posing as owners of seemingly unoccupied land, trying to sell, or rent the property right under the owners’ noses. If you own a secondary home or investment property, check with your local county recorder to see if they offer a fraud alert service. Most county offices provide this free service to notify you of suspicious activity involving your property. You can also set up alerts for properties you own on listing sites to catch unauthorized listings. And if possible, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to watch your property for unexpected visitors.

Please be careful

Will, We had a rental that someone else represented it was theirs, so I know first-hand of these scams!

Great advice Will Hamm . Scams like this were rampant during our oil boom time. Back then most of the scammers used Craig's List.

Hi, Will. Thanks for sharing this always timely post. I have dealt with this directly on listings I have had. People will steal the photos and listing information, post it as a vacation rental, and get potential renters to wire money to rent the property. As the agent you don't find out until they contact you for access to the property and you have to deliver the news that the property was never for rent and the person they were dealing with is not the owner.

Never ever wire money for a rental.

Hi Will- it's a shame that home and land owners have to go through all of this to protect what they rightly own.

Good evening Will Hamm ,

It constantly amazes me the lengths some will go through to try and take over a landlords property!

What a great message and I agree with you, I had recently had two incidents where the owner was not the real owner but the agents were marketing the property without doing their research, Endre

It's definitely important to keep an eye on vacant properties and check in on them often, bad things can happen if you don't.
