Heartbreak In Charlotte: Bidding Adieu to La Grenouille In NY City

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty 179530

MY HEART BROKE YESTERDAY ...

... WHEN I HEARD THAT LA GRENOUILLE RESTAURANT IN NEW YORK CITY IS CLOSING ITS DOORS THIS WEEK

La Grenouille, a beloved NY City institution and my absolute favorite French restaurant is closing its doors this week after 60+ years. I enjoyed my first meal at La Grenouille in 1973. Forever after it was my first choice of French restaurant in New York City. My husband and I enjoyed many a lunch and dinner at La Grenouille over the years. And after we moved back to NY City from Paris, I always felt like I was back in Paris each time we dined at La Grenouille.

La Grenouille (translation: The Frog) was located at 3 East 52nd Street, just off Fifth Avenue in midtown. It attracted celebrities and power players in NY City for decades, including Gregory Peck, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sidney Poitier, Salvador Dali, Sophia Loren, David Bowie, Truman Capote, Lee Radziwill, Katherine Hepburn, Henry Kissinger, John F Kennedy, just to name a few.

What made La Grenouille an iconic restaurant for many years?

  • The elegant atmosphere: with its red-and-gold interior and the most amazing flower arrangements you could hope to see. Yet, while elegant it also felt cozy. To support the elegant atmosphere there was a dress code. Men were required to wear a jacket and tie. And if a man arrived minus a tie, the maitre d' would provide one.

  • Unmatched service: white-gloved waiters who spoke French and made you feel as if you were actually dining in Paris. The waiters were professional waiters... no out-of-work actors, artists, etc.

  • Classic French cuisine: which included some of the best escargot and onion soup I've eaten anywhere. And while I don't normally eat fish, I would often order the filet of sole. The steak tartar was also outstanding. For dessert their souffles and floating island were the best in NY City. And if you couldn't decide on which souffle to order, there was the trio of mini-souffles.

More information about and pictures of La Grenouille.

Renowned Chef Daniel Boulud told The Post that, when he first came to NYC in 1982, “La Grenouille was the reference of French dining with its Old World elegance, charm, cuisine and service that no other restaurant could imitate. It is sad to see it closing.” I couldn't agree more! Although La Grenouille saw its share of problems in the past 10 years and especially during and post-Covid... I'm still sad to see it go, as it holds so many wonderful memories for me of good food and good times.

And while I'm sad to see another iconic French restaurant in NY City bite the dust, I'm grateful that I've had the opportunity to dine at many of the most famous classic French restaurants in NY City that closed their doors long before La Grenouille, including: Lutece, La Cote Basque, La Caravelle, La Goulue. Those dining experiences with Old World elegance, charm, service and outstanding cuisine will remain in my memory forever.

Michael Jacobs yes indeed, Michael. La Grenouille certainly had a very long run. It fools you into thinking it would always be there.

Nina Hollander, Broker  sorry for your loss and it is a sad occasion

We have seen so many changes over the past few years created by the lifestyle changes that have been made by the Pandemic

people realize that they are not doing what they once felt was fine and seek other avenues

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 good morning, Ed... classic French food and restaurants certainly had their hay day in the 1950's, 60's, 70's, and even into the 80's. Then nouvelle cuisine showed up. I never warmed up to it. I'm classic French all the way. It's truly the end of an era.

Nina, The closure of La Grenouille and other long-standing establishments reflects how lifestyle changes have shifted people's preferences. It seems many are now looking for new and different experiences, moving away from traditional venues in favor of something that aligns with their evolving tastes. We were in NYC a few weeks ago, and my how it has changed!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... for me to see La Grenouille close its doors is the end of an era. I keep hearing from people how much NYC has changed... I haven't been back to NY in 18 years and now I'm almost afraid to go and see all the changes.

Jeffrey Richman hi Jeffrey... I will never turn down Italian food... but having lived in Paris and travelled extensively through France I adore classic French cuisine. It's no longer popular in the USA. Several classic French restaurants that were in Charlotte for many years are also gone.

Hi Nina,
I understand your sadness, but you have definitely been blessed to have experienced all that La Grenouille had to offer... the atmosphere, service, and food.

Your post reminded me of the place Max and I went for brunch the day after our wedding. It was a lovely place tucked among the trees next to Lake Wenatchee. We would go there every year for our anniversary. The restaurant and property were bought by a group of millionaires from Microsoft and torn down to build massive weekend homes for themselves. It was very sad for me.

Like so many things, we must tuck them into our treasure chest of memories.

Yes, and I can still buy Patsy's Fra Diavlo Sauce in a few different stores. It is the best jar of sauce I have found (even better than Rao's).

Michael Elliott hi Michael... my second favorite was La Cote Basque... it closed in 2014! 😿 I also had a favorite Chinese restaurant on the Upper East Side that we frequented for over 25 years. It closed some years ago. These days, if I go back to NY City I have to do some serious research on where to go out and eat that sounds familiar.

Jeff Dowler, CRS hi Jeff... it's always so sad when an iconic restaurant like this one disappears. I suppose 60+ years was a great run when you consider that the average life span of a restaurant is 8-10 years.

Endre Barath, Jr. good morning, Endre... this particular closing was not generated as much by finances as other issues... including the "death" of people's love for classic French cuisine and discord within the family. Regardless of the reasons, for me it's a sad ending. One less thing to look forward to when I go back to NYC.
