CELEBRATING NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH IN CHARLOTTE

From passionate dance to flavorful cooking and beyond, Hispanic culture has richly influenced the United Sates for generations and Charlotte, North Carolina is no exception. Nationally, September 15 to October 15 is dedicated to the history, accomplishments, values and creativity of the Hispanic community.

Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 in the United States, when President Lyndon Johnson signed Hispanic Heritage Week into law. In 1988, the celebration was expanded to a month-long celebration when President Ronald Reagan signed National Hispanic Heritage Month into law.

Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15 because this day is independence day for five Latin American countries. In 1821, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua declared their independence.

HISPANIC COMMUNITY IN CHARLOTTE

Charlotte's Hispanic and Latin communities have grown over the years and the Queen City is proud to be recognized as one of 24 US Certified Welcoming Cities.

The largest immigrant group in Charlotte comes from Mexico, representing 22+% of immigrants moving to the Queen City. 4.7% of Charlotte immigrants come from the Honduras; 3.9% come from El Salvador.

With more than 320,000 residents in the Charlotte Region, the Hispanic and Latino communities represent one of the fastest growing segments of the population and are a key driver of the region's population growth. In total, the Hispanic and Latino communities represent about 11% of the total population in the region. Mecklenburg County, where Charlotte is located, is home to some 170,000 people in the Latino and Hispanic communities.

The 2022 U.S. Census American Survey projected the Mecklenburg County Hispanic-Latino population in the following numbers: Mexicans, 58,394; Central Americans, 51,083; South Americans, 19,713; Caribbeans, 27,992. Spanish is spoken by almost 15% of Charlotte's population.

The journey of Hispanic people to Charlotte started 483 years ago with the voyages of the Spanish explorers through the territories of the Carolinas. Spanish was the first European language heard and spoken in today’s Charlotte. For more information about the history and heritage of Hispanic people in Charlotte, click here.

Good morning Nina. There was a big celebration parade and festival in Chicago this past weekend and for the first time in a long time it was peaceful. A lot to say for such a large festivity. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin good morning, Wayne. I remember the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City up Fifth Avenue... it was insane (every year). I'd get out of town for that Sunday!

Thank you for the history lesson Nina Hollander, Broker , My Love. The Hispanic culture was much stronger in my hometown of Moorhead MN then it it here in Minot ND. This was because Moorhead is in the Red River Valley and is huge in agriculture. During the summer we could always look forward to Hispanic agricultural workers coming to the area to help with the sugar beet crop and harvest.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... since we moved to Charlotte in 1998, I've seen a huge increase in our Hispanic and Indian populations.

Nina, weird I have not heard about any festivals or parades on Hispanic Heritage month here in Denver, and we have a large population of hispanics here.

Sep 17, 2024 10:21 AM

Joan Cox how odd, Joan... I'd have expected some serious "celebrating" in your neck of the woods. I'm sure your Hispanic population is larger than in Charlotte.

Hi Nina- I'm so happy that you posted about this. I just looked at the activities for Houston. We're home to the 4th largest Hispanic and Latino population so I know we'll have to have our fix for good Mexican food and some music.

Sep 17, 2024 12:30 PM

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... I had no idea that Houston was home to the 4th largest Hispanic and Latino population... I'm sure that means all sorts of events happening in your metro area.

Will Hamm hi Will... with the Hispanic population in Colorado, I find it hard to believe there are not some celebratory events scheduled in Denver. Then again, what do I know?

Nina we have a fairly high Hispanic population but like Will Hamm I am not aware of any Hispanic celebrations around me either.

George Souto good morning, George... that really surprises me. I'd think with an entire month devoted to Hispanic heritage something would have been organized.

Endre Barath, Jr. thanks, Endre... I believe that many have already switched over... they are no longer just thinking about it. Chris and I are off to see the new Reagan movie on Friday. Can't wait.

Latino population is on the rise in Charlotte, NC. When we arrived at San Jose, CA the most popular name was Rodriguez over 50% total residents were Latinos or Latina with 60 pages of them in the phone directory. Today, they are mere 33% total replaced long ago by Nguyen as most common family name.  I do not know anyone with name like Smith anymore.

Sep 22, 2024 08:33 AM

Sam Shueh hi Sam... so nice to "see" you. Trust you are doing well. Charlotte has a large Hispanic/Latino community and also a large Indian community. We also have quite a few Nguyen here, as well.
