Wordless Wednesday…Flap Those Wings

While we have a few hummingbirds with us all year, we love migration season when all our feeders are heavily used by these beautiful flying creatures.

Did you know

~Hummingbirds usually feed just after they wake up and in the evening before they turn in.

~Hummingbirds sleep in protected areas and can enter a state called Torpor. This allows them to lower their metabolism, heartbeat, and respiration to conserve energy.

~Talk about an appetite. Hummingbirds can eat up to half their weight in nectar and insects. They can consume their body weight in nectar or sugar water and 2000 insects daily.

~Because of their high metabolism, they must eat frequently or perish.

*Please consider putting out a hummingbird feeder if you have them in your area. All it takes is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water!

I don't have a feeder at my house, but I have aloe plants and the hummingbirds love the buds that come from them.

That's good Brian England plus you have aloe for burns.

They have such a different way to fly than other birds. I love to watch them at a feeder.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty They're amazing. Larry stood in the yard with the little feeder cup in his hand. He was patient and finally one came to the cup.

Good morning, Kathy... 2,000 insects in one day is a lot! I've always thought about a hummingbird feeder but have never done anything about it. Maybe this is the year to do so.

Sep 18, 2024 07:52 AM

Nina Hollander, Broker all you need it one part sugar to 4 parts water. Larry microwaves the water then stirs the sugar in. You need to change it every few days and keep the feeder clean. That's it!!!

Kathy Streib okay... you've convinced me. As soon as I'm fully back on my feet I'll make it a project.

I was sitting in front of our house on our little porch and heard this thrumming sound, on looking up there was a hummingbird feeding from the plants. Love to see these little guys around. The thing with feeders is that they need to be cleaned regularly so the birds do not get any infections.

You're right Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 If we've had a lot of feeders we'll bring them in every day. But if not we clean them every few days!!!  The small window feeders don't get as dirty.

I love watching the hummingbirds drinking from the water fountain out on the back patio.  We see them frequently and it's so fun to see just how fast they are!  They live in a huge plant way back in the corner of the yard as we see them coming and going over there a lot.  So fun!  As the weather cools down I hope to take photos again and share them here.

Love the photos, Kathy! We enjoy watching Hummingbirds and have about 20 feeders around the yard (about 2 acres). they often fight over them, zoom-zooming at each other! I am looking to replace them with those that have no metal. They are very high maintenance!

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! I can't imagine cleaning that many!!! We have plastic feeders. We had a bright orange one for the Orioles but it's faded to a pale yellow.

Given their metabolism it is clearly a good thing that they can shut down and go into a state of torpor - otherwise if they were up and running (or flying) 18 hours a day, there wouldn't be a bug left on earth! They would have eaten them all.
