National Cheeseburger Day is today, September 18th. (This, by the way, is different from National Burger Day which is celebrated on May 28th). What could be more American, besides Coke and apple pie, than a juicy cheeseburger? And what a great excuse to go off our diets if even for one day.
Legend has it that sometime in the 1920's someone in Chicago asked for a slice of cheese to be added to his burger and voila, the birth of the cheeseburger! But there are lots of places that lay claim to having "invented" the cheeseburger. So I suppose we won't ever really know it's origins.
It's estimated that the average American eats over 100 burgers per year and while there don't seem to be statistics as to what portion of these are cheeseburgers, it's probably safe to assume that a big percentage of these burgers are actually cheeseburgers.

It's not a far stretch to say that cheeseburgers have achieved a sort of "cult status." Did you know the cheeseburger has its own Facebook page for National Cheeseburger Day? I suppose these days we should expect Facebook pages for just about anything and everything, but I must admit finding this out did give me pause for thought for a minute. To take this one step further, Charlotte can boast its own Facebook Burger Blog: The Charlotte Burger Blog.
