What Is Mid-Century Modernism?

The Mid-Century Modernism movement got its start in Germany from Bauhaus architects and designers who migrated to America after World War II. MCM flourished for several decades, predominantly in the post-war suburbs of the 1950s. Interiors often included wood elements merged with modern materials like metal, glass, vinyl, plywood, Plexiglass and Lucite. Mid-century architecture focuses on simplicity and functionality.

What distinguishes mid-century modern design are clean lines, minimal ornamentation, contrasting materials, open floor plans. Large windows to bring in natural light and help blend indoor and outdoor living are another aspect of mid-century modern architecture. These homes often feature patios, courtyards, and other outdoor spaces to connect to interior through large sliding glass doors.

Hello Nina - the subject of my madness may be subject to interpretation.   And it can sometimes prompt my lack of participation with some.   The topic of MCM (mid-century modern) architecture will certainly capture my attention.

Michael Jacobs I suspect that may be true for many of us as we get older.

Michael Jacobs hi Michael... my mother's decorating taste lent itself to mid-century modern... so no surprise that I avoided it in my own homes. But in recent years, I've gained an appreciation for it.

Nina Hollander, Broker - there are many things I "see" today that remind me of the past where I have new-or-reconnected-appreciation.  Life continues to be interesting in that way.

This sounds like a fun tour Nina Hollander, Broker . All styles pictured are familiar to me but I'd love to see the interiors, especially the church.

Thank you Nina Hollander, Broker that was fun to get a closer look. I showed it to Timmothy too. I think I would be in awe of the architecture but I'm not sure it would give me the feeling of being in the presence of God. From the best I could tell that is a huge pipe organ. If I am correct do you know if it is still functional?

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... here's a link to the photo tour of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Comforter.

This Church is actually not in Charlotte, but in the City of Belmont west of Charlotte... very dramatic.

If you click on the link in my post, it will take you to a house by house interior tour. Some very interesting and beautiful interiors.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... I have no idea about the organ... but I would assume it's functional.

Good morning Nina. Must say I am becoming more of a fan of mid-century modern design. It motivates my pondering about design. If I lived closer I would have ticketed. Enjoy the tour if you go.

Wayne Martin hi Wayne... interestingly it's the same for me. I have a new appreciation for this style that I never had previously. As for attending, I'm probably still about two weeks away from these kind of activities after my hip replacement.

Thank you, Roy... it's finally stopped raining here at my end of Charlotte. The wind has also died down. Thankfully, we had no power outages (at least thus far).

This sounds like a great tour! Mid Century is huge in Austin. My son and family just moved back into their home after an extensive renovation of their home. They love the mid-century look and their home is nothing short of stunning! Yesterday was the initial moving day with some new things being delivered today. My mother's taste also leaned to Mid-century so tended to stay away from it but now I'm embracing it more and appreciate the look.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX hi Dorie...it's funny how those of us who grew up with mid-century in the mid-century haven't gone all ga-ga over this return to that style. But young people are acting like they've discovered the look.

Hi Nina- I myself have gravitated a bit towards MCM although I still enjoy the Transitional Style.

Sep 27, 2024 12:00 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Kathy Streib hi Kathy, the "problem" is that builders are not building MCM homes so if you want one you need to buy one built in the 50's or 60's... but those homes are much smaller in square footage.

George Souto good morning, George... mid-century modern has become so popular in Charlotte that I more and more beautifully renovated homes that take one back to the 50's and 60's.

Nina Hollander, Broker  loved your post and the photos illustrate your point. Here in Los Angeles, Modern and mid century modern homes are always well liked:)Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. good morning, Endre... I know that about LA. Here in Charlotte, modern is still not all that popular. 2-story homes have always been the preferred style here... obviously, in the 50's and 60's we saw more of that mid-century modern come about... but I think many of those homes have been razed to make room for mini-mansions over the years.

Brian England good morning, Brian... well, at least you hopefully learned a lot about mid-century modern neighborhoods in your area. You never know when that knowledge might prove useful in future! :)

I did and I saved the search I created on the MLS where I roped off all of the neighborhoods.  Perhaps it will indeed come in handy one day, haha.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I see a lot of mid-century modern neighborhoods in Dallas and Austin when I visit. I don't see it in Flower Mound because it's not that old.

I think many of those homes are interesting, often customized and updated too. For buyer's I had looking to buy in Dallas, their chief complaint was no utility room and one car garage or too small two car garages. Otherwise, they are charming and very stylish for mostly millenials.

Sep 28, 2024 04:39 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP you make a great point... many of our homes that would fall into that mid-century style have no garages at all.
