A good neighbor can be a source of continual joy. The Bible even says, "Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away." For when one is need- whether to borrow an egg, get a ride or help with a physical task-one's neighbor nearby is a better, more accessible and practical blessing than a family member far away.
September 28 is National Good Neighbor Day, a day to celebrate those folks we call good neighbors. While it used to be celebrated on the fourth Sunday in September, it now has it's own official date annually of September 28th.
Here is a brief history of Good Neighbor Day. Back in the 1970's, Mrs. Becky Mattson from Lakeside, Montana, recognizing the important of good neighbors, initiated an effort to make this a National Day.
With help from congressman Mike Mansfield, she succeeded in getting numerous governors and three presidents (Nixon, Ford and Carter) to issue official proclamations.
Twenty-one years ago in 2003, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution, sponsored by Montana Senator Max Baucus, making September 28 National Good Neighbor Day. Let your good neighbors know you appreciate them today.

Do not forsake your own friend or your father’s friend,
Nor go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity;
Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
