Gold Star Mother's & Family's Day
The Gold Star family is one that has experienced a loss of a loved one-an immediate family member who died as the result of military service. Those who have died on duty leave behind parents, siblings, spouses, and children.
Those left behind are recognized as Gold Star Families.
The History of the Gold Star Family Designation
The phrase "Gold Star Family," dates back to World War I, when military families displayed service flags featuring a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the United States Armed Forces.
My aunt was a double recipient of the Gold Star, her husband was held prisoner and died during the Korean War and and his only son, my cousin, a helicopter gunner perished in the Vietnam War. It's true that only those who have lost loved ones during conflict know and fully understand the pain of loss.
Am still haunted to this day that my cousin promised he'd come home safe as I desperately clung to him, saying goodbye through free-flowing tears. Instead he arrived in a pine box, draped with the American flag.
Our family was never the same.
