Warm Hearts, Wagging Tails; Oh, the Power of Adoption

53 Words of Love

A shelter dog awaits, feeling cold and all alone,

Full of hope for love and a fur-ever home.

With every tail wag, a story unfolds,

Of loyalty, warmth, family and hearts of gold.

Adopt a friend and change two lives today,

In their gentle eyes, love will stay.

Together, forever, come what may.

For the 53-word challenge, I wanted to write a poem that reflects the beauty and deep emotional connection that comes from dog adoption - something that is incredibly near and dear to my heart. As someone who has spent countless hours volunteering with our local shelter, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of adoption for both dogs and their new owners. Each time I step into the shelter, I'm reminded of the hope and love these animals have to give, patiently waiting for their forever homes.

The opening lines, "A shelter dog awaits, feeling cold and all alone, Full of hope for love and a fur-ever home.” encapsulate the sheer longing and optimism in every shelter dog. These dogs have such resilient spirits, hoping for a family to see their worth, just as I’ve seen, working alongside them. Every tail wag and nuzzle tells a story of their readiness to offer loyalty and companionship, as expressed in the poem’s middle lines, “With every tail wag, a story unfolds, of loyalty, warmth, family and hearts of gold.

Through my experiences hosting annual fundraising events for the shelter, I’ve met so many incredible people who have shared in the joy of bringing a dog into their lives. These events help raise much-needed funds for food, medical care, and other resources, ensuring these dogs get the second chance they deserve.

The last message, “Adopt a friend, change two lives today, in their gentle eyes, love will stay,” represents not only the profound impact adoption has on a dog's life but, also the unmatched joy they bring into our own lives. I know this well from adopting multiple fur babies myself, and those babies have enriched my life in ways I could never have imagined. Together, we're building many homes in Charlotte, filled with unconditional love.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - Your poem and the story that follows encapsulates a mission that is so powerful, if it were published could probably get more donations than a Go "Fund Me Page" on FaceBook. Right now it just needs to circulate like tree roots underground to raise awareness for more pets to receive the home they deserve. And nobody knows better than a Nurse how important it is for lowering human blood pressure and it can provide companionship to the most depressed and needy people. I really wish schools would allow dogs and cats inside to help calm the children who are growing up in a very stressful environment. After the pandemic it is my belief schools need to do a lot more for the time lost that children can never get back. What better way than to bring puppies and kitties into their lives. That is my ideology.

As for you, your professional writing isn't just about grammar, words, or spelling. No it's about taking a direct hit directly to massage the heart to get a message across to bring together and unite loving animals with humans.

Thank you for your postive and optimistic poem and story writing that I believe will make a significant difference.

Thank you.

Wow, that is so powerful and sums up every aspect so well and succinctly. Everything said above by others  is so true. A very heartfelt post, thank you for sharing. It is something I missed when I got divorced, my fur baby, and when I met Annie, I got three loves, one may be bi-polar, the cat but Jackie is so sweet she makes up for Sylvester, and then of course Annie whose heart for animals is so large.

At the onset of the pandemic, the shelters were a place where many sought a home companion to help get through the uncertainty of the days.

With the shift to remote working more people found the comfort of unconditional love from their new family member.

Hi Debe- well said and well done. I love the attention that pet adoption is getting. Have you seen Sitting with Dogs by Rocky Kanaka?  He goes into shelters and works with dogs that may have been abused and mistreated.

I loved this post!!! I had 4 Samoyeds...the 4th was a rescue.  He looked at me every day and said "thank you " with his soulful eyes.

My sister is trying to adopt and it can be  painful process!

I was a Big Brother for a long time...they dropped me because I was single. Didn't make sense to me thenn I started working with a Catholic charity.....giving Christmas presents, food, clothing, toys and candy to orphans. Then Fr. Doyle started asking me for largish sums of money. I moved away after a divorce so I no longer did these things.  I dress as Ded Moroz (Grandfather Winter- Slavic Santa Claus..in a blue Santa suit) and the Ukrainian orphans were such a joy.

I also volunteered at an animal shelter.....and yes, I wanted to bring all of the pets home!!
