While I May Not Embrace Technology

I Do Appreciate A Good K.I.S.S. Approach to Adapting to the Reality of

Real Estate Life

It was a while back. Although I may not recall the exact date, I remember becoming aware that combining technology with a high touch technique was a possibility.  It seemed like it could be a solution that was tailor-made for me.  Eureka!  That’s definitely a strategy that spoke to this low-tech guy.

Although not a luddite, I've rarely been an early adapter. And that's why the K.I.S.S. rule of engagement comes into play. You know, Keep It Simple, Stupid. In my opinion, life is often too complicated, why not stay where simplicity stays as part of the scenario. Yes, that's my approach and here are my three examples:

My cell phone - again, pretty simple. My first cellular phone was decidedly not smart. In fact, even receiving a call was nearly cost-prohibitive. So, this cheapskate kept my old-school pager active for longer than I should have and used that brick-like device in conjunction with my familiar beeper. The eventual arrival of a smarter telephone tool was nice. But let's not go too far, right? I was and still am reluctant to add apps and assorted other bright, shiny objects. Being out of range, so to speak, worked and continues to work for me. Yes, I digress.

Prior to real estate, I was kinda comfortable with the basics of computer use. Very basic. Nothing too complicated, but a bit beyond the image shown above. As I entered the profession, MLS books and other 20th-century-era introductions were still very much in use. And the office I joined was not filled with technological wizards. My new officemates seemed impressed with my speed which tells you more about their expertise than my skillset. Control-alt-delete seemed to be a new-to-them computer insight that amazed them. Oh, well. Again, I digress.

Lockboxes and access to them. Obviously, an important part of a real estate practitioner's toolbox. I saw many changes in this segment of the business. Of course, the human element still came into play as errors and mishaps seem to be a constant. Still, digressing even though I am no longer active in the business. Life goes on. . .

This is my entry to the October 2024 ActiveRain Challenge hosted by Carol Williams and Frank Worrell. Definitely not complicated but this submission has been sealed with a K.I.S.S.

Nice post Michael Jacobs and congratulations on it being featured. We live in an era where in San Diego, you can't open a lockbox anymore if you do not own a mobile device with Bluetooth and the Sentri App.

Back to basics is a good start.  Times have changed but there is still time to consider the path forward.

Thanks for sharing. I realize that all my tools including PC, phones are over 10 years so on the Amazon blow day I plan to have both upgraded may be for another 10 years?

Time will tell.

Michael Jacobs, I remember the early technology that we started with:

The pagers, the bag phone that didn't work, the slow computer that took forever to 'boot up,' and the fax machine!

Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 - ah, yes, the fax machine.  But I remember being in another industry before real estate and the dependence on the telex machines for international communication.

In my previous nursing career, there was little technology. We used glass thermometers, the charts were handwritten, and we counted out medication for each patient.

Dear Michael:

The topics in the article you wrote today are excellent! 👏 I agree with you! At this moment, we needed to study tech in parallel with our realtor's course!

A few weeks ago, I learned to use ChatGPT! At the beginning of my conversation with my son, he told me why don't use ChatGPT. I didn't want to use it because I thought that was for lazy people 😌, and my answer was, I don't want to use it! I don't have time to learn how to use ChatGPT.

My son told me the following phrase: Write the parameters needed for the presentation to ChatGPT, and he will do it for you in less than 30 seconds. I laughed but did. The surprise was that ChatGPT did it! ChatGPT doit in less the 15 SECONDS!🏆

At that moment, I changed my brain chip and asked him if he had software for making videos with a script! He told me I had not used it yet, but these are some names. One of them was Pistorius. Two videos of my blog here are done with ChatGPT and Pistorius!

The point is one technology can help us, but as computer programmers say, if you enter garbage, we receive garbage!

This is my following conclusion to be competitive, we need to be in parallel with tech! The new real estate marketers offer a lot of software to help us in our jobs. For example: some interesting software for us are Matterport, ChatGPT, CRM, Websites, plugins, Pistorius (to make videos), etc. But, if we don't learn how the tech can help us, another realtor will do it for us!

It never is too late to learn and inviting all to start to learn because tech can make our lives easier! Also, more to me for the important points of our life!

Sorry for the long blah, blah, blah. All of us have good brains and sure can learn quick tech!

Thank you again for your blog! I wish you a Happy weekend with our family and friends!

Romulo Borrero - while I have heard of ChatGPT, you explored it with a much deeper dive.  Technology seems to change at lightning-like speed.  And, by the example you have shared, even quicker.

The KISS approach serves most of us well, Michael. People tend to overdo and overthink until realizing that less becomes more, especially by design!

Fair Dealing!

Good morning, Jacob!

As a new technology, I'm trying to learn how to use it better. ChatGPT helps me prepare my listing presentation.

Also, to do middle marketing research for focus groups inside Panama and outside Panama.

Besides, make some pictures, logos, and probability studies.

For example, two months ago, if I needed a reference price for a property, three months ago, spending a lot of time searching prices on real estate listing boards. Now, between 2 - 3 minutes.

My intention with my words is to exchange our technological knowledge and help each other improve as part of a friendly Active Rain community.

My studies were in a marketing degree, but I studied SEO (search engine optimization). I manage my website like a hobby because I enjoy my realtor career and learned to do it myself.

Now I'm learning to use ChatGPT, Pictory, and click Funnel well.

If someone wants to ask me anything about this area, I'm ready to help without commitment. You can break easy wood sticks, but a group of sticks is more difficult.

I wish you all a happy weekend and hope that next week all get our targets!

Michael, Keeping things simple can be less stressful.  And good that you now do not have to venture into new tech since you are retired. I know a few people who wanted to be true luddites, but younger family members pulled them along to embrace some tech things. Happy Autumn.

Michael Jacobs: This is an excellent entry for this month's challenge. I recall when everyone else was taking computer courses, but not me. I wanted to learn the one thing I needed at that moment, something I could use right away. It was like driving a car: Show me the gas and brake pedals; I didn’t need to know what all the parts under the hood did.

Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 - basics continue to matter.  We may shift and veer a bit in a different direction at times.  It's a part of the journey.

I am with you on this.

Unlike my husband who has too many apps to count on his phone, I have very few. I prefer it that way.

Recently on a cruise and everything was handled via their app. OMG...the app never opened when you needed it...had to restart the phone every time you wanted to use it. (No, not just me and my inexperience with apps....it was a common complaint heard throughout the cruise.)

I'm still old school and prefer my laptop to my phone for doing and scheduling and researching most anything.

Oct 22, 2024 03:35 AM
Michael Jacobs

Sharon Tara - I know what you mean.  One of the many things I wonder about is those who are shut out of the world because they are not as tech-savvy as others.  Admittedly, there is some stuff I avoid, ignore or seek an alternative.  Finding the right match for the situation continues. . .

Oct 22, 2024 07:58 AM

That must have been frustrating, especially on a cruise where you were hoping to get away from the technology.

Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400  Yes it was very frustrating, but lucky for me, we were with our daughter who had been on the same cruise line last year and she dealt with all our scheduling.

Hi Michael, I can relate to all three hi-tech solutions - I was happy to replace the typewriter with the computer ...Opening lockboxes with the app on my phone has worked very smoothly, too, even though I thought there will be constant glitches. I liked the K.I.S.S. attitude ...Who doesn't like simple?!😀
