Choose Your Clients Wisely.

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400 311291

Choose your clients wisely. It's like that old saying goes, "You can choose your friends but not your relatives." In the same way, you can choose your buyers and your sellers. Don't put up with toxic clients because you need the sale. Working with people you like, and respect is essential for a successful and fulfilling transaction. Trust your instincts and be willing to walk away if the client isn't the right fit. Doing so will make room for exceptional buyers or sellers who will make the real estate journey more rewarding.

As agents, we have the freedom to select clients who value and respect our expertise. Understand that not every potential client is a good match, and that's perfectly acceptable. If you find yourself dreading each interaction, it might be time to acknowledge that the client is not the right fit and take the necessary steps. Whether it's referring them to another agent or terminating the professional relationship, always be ready to make that decision.

Working with the wrong client can cost you more than time and sleep. It can also lead to unnecessary stress and frustration. Instead of thinking of it as turning down a listing, consider it as making room for a better client who will value your services and expertise.

Real estate is a demanding yet beautiful profession, and we owe it to ourselves to work with clients who make the journey enjoyable and rewarding.

So, always choose to work with people you like and respect. You always have a choice.

Margaret, so, so true!  Every time I've ignored the red flags because of the size of the potential check, I've regretted it.  It takes a lot to drive this engineer over the edge, but some have the skill set to make me dread the next phone call, text or email from them.  Now, I'm very selective.  It may mean less business, but sometimes less is more.

Excellent advice, Margaret.  I remember a couple of times when I ignored warning signs and lived to endure the discomfort of it.

We have all disregarded warning signs or worked with incompatible clients. Some people learn quickly, while others continue to make the same mistakes and end up unhappy and discouraged.

Good morning Margaret,

I am in firm agreement...Choose your clients wisely! Through my 32 years in real estate I have learned to spot those incompatible clients. It's not worth the toxic environment they create surrounding the transaction. I've learned life is too short!

Hello Margaret - so true.  In my time in real estate, I noticed some agents who seemed to have a history of choosing the "wrong" clients.

Buyers or sellers.  Sometimes both.  The listings they had seemed to be priced too high.  Or were not market-ready for one reason or another.  The offers they presented on behalf of their clients were slightly (or more) amiss.

Yes, client representation is a choice.  And like choosing one's agent representation, it's important.

Good morning Margaret. I am a big fan of "choose wisely"! And life became much better when I was active applying those words to buyers and sellers I would work with. Enjoy your day and continue to choose wisely.

The more time spent in the real estate, the easier it is to identify those who are not a good fit. This is an important skill to have!

The signs are there.  If we choose to ignore them we effectively sell our soul to the devil for the almighty paycheck.

Not a good fit - time to move on.

Margaret you know how much I have run my business over the years in this manner - choose your clients carefully - very carefully.  I just learned the other day that someone who had referred a client to me years ago was mad at me for not taking them on. Clearly that person didn't get the unusual and messed up relationships going in that marriage and there wasn't a chance I was going to take it on.  I knew where it would end up.  Move on I say.  There are plenty of like-minded folks that appreciate the value we all bring to the table.
