Pets and Property

Not everyone wants a pet in their home. That being said 66% of American households own a pet. In light of that statistic in can be hard for a family with allergy/sensitivity issues to find a home that won't leave them sneezing.

Many people have animal allergies, especially people who have other allergies or asthma. Allergies to cats and dogs affect 10 to 20% of the world's population.

So what can a home Seller do that has/had pets in their home. The "has" pets in the home would be the most difficult, especially if you have children in the home that would miss the pet(s) if they were removed.

The BEST case scenario, and the least likely, is finding a friend or relative who will take the pet(s) in to their while your home is listed. The best thing you can do while keeping the pets in the home is to keep your pet(s) well groomed to minimize the shedding and to have the carpets and bare floors professionally cleaned. After a through cleaning vacuum daily.

I realize this is a lot of work for the few buyers who have allergy problems but even those who do not have allergies  will appreciate the look, smell, and feel of a clean house. Your home will sell faster if there are no pet odors or corners of the floor with pet hair.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. You can follow Timmothy on FB as Titus & Philemon and you can also check him out on Instagram as Instagram.com/titus and philemon/ .For Timmothy's website type timmtimmothy.com into your browser. I tried to put it in a link here but it refuses to work. Do NOT put anything in front of timmtimmothy.com or it will not work.

Good morning Bob,

I think it's way more than a few buyers who have allergies so I think it's important to have pets removed for at lease the first two weeks a home is on the market.  Pet owners are so use to the smell they can't tell that it can be offensive to others. I'm seeing buyers don't want carpet in their homes due to allergies and is actually better if having a pet (in some cases).

I agree Dorie Dillard Austin TX that the numbers are most likely greater. I really liked the hard wood floor trend but I still like carpet in the living room and bedroom.

Good morning Bob. Must say just when we thought it was time for a dog, we found out my grandson is allergic to dogs. We knew he had a list of things he was allergic to but the dog issue came up in his last series of tests. Conclusion by my wife, no dog! Enjoy your day.

Oh, that would be heart breaking after already having made the decision to get a pet and then losing the choice Wayne Martin .

Good morning, Bob... I've found that people who are truly highly allergic to dogs or cats will have their agent first ask if any pets have lived in the home... and if they have, they will pass on looking at that house.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... I've often had calls from buyer agents asking about previous pet history in my listings. And when I have a buyer who I know has sever issues with allergies or asthma in their family, I will often check with the listing agent about pet history and discuss with my client.

That is a really smart way to go about it Nina Hollander, Broker . I do not remember a time of having a buyer ask me to go first for this reason.

Good morning and I agree. Pet odors do not help sell a home, that's for sure!!!

Amen Kat Palmiotti . You wonder how anyone can adapt to pet smells as the "norm".

Wow, that is a lot of shedding and yet another reason that I have no desire to have pets in my home, haha.

Pets cost a whole lot more then their purchase price Brian England . I think that is one of the reasons the shelters are overflowing. People often act without thinking things out.

Bob, I have had buyers with severe allergies, and we do have to make some calls to ensure there have been no pets.  My ex-husband was severely allergic to cats and would close up his esophagus.   We always bought new.

Buying new is the best solution Joan Cox but even then I have know builders that bring their dog to the job site so that is still no guarantee.

Pets most definitely are an issue whether moving to or from.  I know with rentals it is difficult as well.  m

Well behaved pets are a blessing, Bob. Once, while showing homes to a buyer, I walked up to the front door of one, before opening it and could smell strong cat & dog urine odors. Needless to say, we weren't inside long. Gag!

We have had dogs, cats, chickens, a rooster and pot bellied pigs. We are petless right now and I would love to have another kitty to choose us as it's humans.
