Perspective…A Squirrel’s View
The squirrels in our backyard come and go. Some may have found greener pastures/peanuts and some may be in
squirrel heaven.
So, I’m back to “training” some squirrels to take a peanut from my hand. The other day, a fairly young squirrel was across the yard and stopped when I whistled.
I held out a peanut and he started hopping across the grass
for his reward.
He stopped and looked around. Again, I held up the peanut.

So…I tossed it on the grass hoping to entice him.
He still couldn’t find it. I thought of the quote “even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.”

It dawned on me, though, that while I could see the peanut on the grass…I am seeing it from my perspective…standing above the grass.
I got down on my knees to see what the squirrel was seeing.

Well…of course he didn’t see the peanut! How could he?!
That’s the thing about our points of view. Everyone has one that is unique to them.
It changes with time, location, and age. It can change multiple times in our day…or never at all.
One of the best things we can do is to understand the other person’s point of view…to try to see things from their perspective.

Empathy begins with understanding life from another person's perspective. Nobody has an objective experience of reality. It's all through our own individual prisms.

The greatest tragedy for any human being is going through their entire lives believing the only perspective that matters is their own.
