When Those Beautiful Leaves Turn Into Hard Work

Leaf raking season has once again begun in Northern States like North Dakota. Raking leaves can be work but it can also be fun. As our kids were growing up they never tired of playing in the leaves and even having their pets play with them.

The pic above is the real Titus (guinea pig) that you have enjoyed in Timmothy's daily cartoons. The pic below is Timmothy in the leaves about 12 years ago.

If you do not have kids and you just want the leaves gone BUT you don't ant to hire the job out you still have options. #1) Mow and bag. Be prepared to empty that lawn mower bag often. #2) Rake. Do it on a non-windy day, often a trick in North Dakota. #3) Round them up with a leaf blower. This method is the most fun. You start at the edges of your yard and blow everything to the middle and then bag it up.

Note that not all leaf rakes are equal. I find the ones with the biggest heads make the job the easiest.

Unlike the cartoon above we have been very dry this year. While I often burn the leaves I rake it would be a mistake as well as illegal to do so this year.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. You can follow Timmothy on FB as Titus & Philemon and you can also check him out on Instagram as Instagram.com/titus and philemon/ .For Timmothy's website type timmtimmothy.com into your browser. I tried to put it in a link here but it refuses to work. Do NOT put anything in front of timmtimmothy.com or it will not work.

Good morning, Bob... fortunately, I live in a community where lawn maintenance is included in my HOA fees... and that includes getting rid of fallen leaves.

Believe it or not I actually enjoy raking leaves Nina Hollander, Broker . I enjoy it because it's the end of the comfortable part of the fall before the snow falls (usually), the lawn looks so good after being raked and mowed, I can imagine playing in the leaves with you my Love.

I would never rake my leaves, I just let them be and become part of the earth eventually, haha.  Since I have a landscaper now though, he rakes the leaves.

Brian England if you don't rake them they rot and that would also kill your grass. As long as the temp stays above freezing raking can be a wonderful state of meditation.

Good morning Bob. Raking leaves is a memory for me. And that said I had to rake since it was before leaf blower convenience. And yet I still refer to it as the good old days. Enjoy your day.

I still enjoy it Wayne Martin as long as it is above freezing. Another thing I like about it is I enjoy burning the leaves in my fire pit.

In our last home, we had to worry about raking the leaves and that was a job I wasn't a fan of. Those things were heavy and kept coming. We had a lot of leaf-losing trees!

This home we don't have to rake. We have a lot of fir/pine trees; only one kind loses its needles and they just blend into the forest floor. We do have some trees that lose their leaves like aspen and rocky mountain maple, but they mostly fall in the woods. So luckily this is one thing we don't have to do.

It's nice you can enjoy the change without the work Kat Palmiotti . As far as a pine that looses it's needles that would most likely be a Tamarac pine. They are very beautiful. The needles are very soft and they turn bright yellow in the Fall.

Yes, Bob "RealMan" Timm - the Tamarac or Larch is very beautiful - it also makes great firewood and wooden utensils/benches/tables.

I have some leaves to rake as well and we have many more to fall.

I intend to get to them this weekend Roy Kelley but at this point I'd say only 50% have fallen so I will be at it for a while.

Hello Bob, I am raking leaves every later afternoon that I do not have lots down the road.  Want to get them bag before we get snow.

That is a great idea Will Hamm and like you I want to do it while they are dry, not wet with snow.

Hannah Williams I have never wanted to live in a community. It's always been single families homes with no HOA but as I am aging I may change my mind.

I always had a single home, Bob "RealMan" Timm but now that I  /me am a  single person , I do not need a large home. It is just me, so living in a community where someone else does the work is ideal
