Where Does Our Electric Come From for The Villages, Florida?

Last night Michelle asked me where do we get our electricity?  Big part of The Villages is SECO which is a cooperative, but where does our electricity come from?  Turns out SECO buys the electricity from Seminole Electric Cooperative, and they generate the electric.  Where are the plants?  Looks like they have 3 major generating plants, Hardee/Polk County Line, Florida and two plants 6 miles north of Palatka, Florida on the Saint Johns River.

Many people believe that just because we have underground utilities we have no worries, true as far as trees within The Villages but!  The transformers are above ground, and the electricity must get here from where it is generated.  Look at the maps I have included the locations of the generating plant, now look at hurricane path both on west and east coast.

Currently The Weather Channel is on, and I am watching all the tornado warnings popping up south of I-4.  That is my biggest concern late tonight and overnight for our area.  Experts recommend you find an interior area in your home with no windows if you get a tornado warning, close all interior doors, and hunker down, got a bike helmet?  Put it on.  We have a walk in closet and glad it is fairly good size to fit Michelle’s aunt and mom who is in a wheelchair, her and maybe me.

Thinking about hiding a bottle or two amongst the clothes!  Say safe and we all will be fine!  Will try to post later tonight.

Dick Betts as if this hurricane isn't bad enough, you guys have to be concerned about tornadoes as well.

Hi Dick- I have the Weather Channel on now (it's 9:26 pm your time). Michelle asked a good question and I like your answer. Even with underground lines, if the big transformers get hit, like ours did with the Dorecho (tornados) that came through, once those transformers were toppled...that was it.

Good call about the bike helmets and water in the closet. Don't forget your flashlights and charged cell phones. Best of luck.

It's always good to know where our power comes from and it would be best if all of our power came naturally from the sun, haha.

Electricity is seldom generated and distributed protected. There is always a risk and with the larger tension lines repairs would take a long time.

Hello Dick and glad that the lines are underground not like in Pennsylvania where most are above ground and wind, tree and even ice can be a problem.
