Motivational Monday…Give Me Attitude

When I hired consultants for our Business Staffing office, I considered several markers.

If they had experience in staffing, all the better, however that was not key for me.

It was important that they meshed with the other consultants. We had an atmosphere that was not just about work but family. Everyone got along and we all worked hard, and we played hard together.

ATTITUDE was by far the most important ingredient. I could teach them how to recruit applicants, how to prep them for an interview, and how to accept a job offer.

Since getting new business clients was my forte, I looked for someone with the right mind-set who I could train who could call on a company and walk out with a new client.

Frank Martin is the Head Basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts. Watch his response to a young reporter when asked an interesting question.

If  you’re looking for someone for your team or office, it’s relatively easy to teach them how to use the MLS or hold an Open House. They can learn about Buyer’s Agreements and how to work their sphere.

However you’re fighting an uphill battle if that person’s heart isn’t into the task. If the only reason they’re there is because it’s a “job’ then good luck.

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.
Thomas Jefferson

There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.
W. Clement Stone

Frank Martin is awesome, I have always enjoyed listening to his interviews!  A person has to have the right attitude to succeed!

Brian England I don't know if you watched him when he coached Kansas State but he could be scary on the sidelines.

He is quite intense, but that is part of what makes him amazing, his passion Kathy Streib

Good morning Kathy,

That was a well thought out question from that reporter and Frank Martin gave an excellent answer! It is all about attitude! You can teach the mechanicals of the assignment but if you don't have the right attitude you aren't going to be successful!

I agree Dorie Dillard Austin TX I was impressed with the question from the young reporter and that Frank Martin took the time to boost the reporter's young ego.

My favorite quote is by Zig Ziglar - "Attitudes are habits of thought." And as it has been said, you hire for attitude and train for skills; you fire for attitude as well.

Hello Kathy - as a non-sports guy, it probably does not come as much of a surprise that I didn't immediately recognize Frank Martin.   However, the clip you shared showed me insight into how he treats people.  And his answer continued to show his thoughtfulness in words and likely behavior.

Michael Jacobs he could be intense and scary when I'd watch him when he coached Kansas State. But that response to the young reporter's question is a stand-out.

It is a hard attribute to read. Some who you hire start out with great attitudes that quickly go away. Some start out scared and build into wonderful employees who everyone loves. Whenever I call for a recommendation, I ask about attitude WHEN THEY LEFT.

Excellent point Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty you can always tell when someone doesn't want to be where they are. They'll find all kinds of excuses for why things aren't working out or they'll find the negatives in where they are.

BTW- congrats to the Mets today.

Good Morning Kathy Streib

Frame of mind is important from the owner of the business all the way through the pecking order. Each person must see how they fit into the structure and the purpose of such.

Kathy, attitude and passion must be two qualities in someone you hire.

very true Joan Cox It's hard to "train" those two qualities in a person. You can encourage and nurture them if they're there.

Tude marks the spot Kathy!  Too me it's the #1 marker of becoming successful at whatever one is working towards (business or personal).  If you think you can, you can.  And it goes the other way If you think you can't, you can't.  Your right either way!

I found it interesting back in the foreclosure days how many that had TUDE lost it temporarily (or for good) when it came to selling  real estate.  I'd already been through several market shifts and knew it was just another hitch in the git-a-long that we could and did recover from.  A lot of us rainers supported each other in those days....and of course we still do to this day!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I remember meeting some agents in those days. They were used to the "good" market and didn't have the drive or desire to adjust to the new market.

Here at ActiveRain, members came together to share ideas and support each other.
