Ask An Ambassador: Why Spend Time In The Rain?

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.WarrenCountyOhioRealEstate.com SAL.2002007747

With so many different places and ways to spend your time, why should ActiveRain have even a minute of your day?

Over the 18 years since we joined ActiveRain, we've put in a LOT of minutes in the Rain and still find value in the community.

Why keep coming back?

The short answer, "It's the people".

The people here come and go, but the core culture lives on because the membership keeps it going.  A pay it forward mentality that fosters sharing information, helping each other, and forming bonds well beyond what you'd expect from people you will (mostly) never meet in real life (engineer brain sounding alarm...Bill, you're heading towards touchy feely stuff, hit Reverse!!!).

While ActiveRain isn't immune from gasholes, most people that fit the category move on after kicking people in the shins until they learn that trolls aren't welcome here.  Playing well in the sandbox is key to being an accepted member of this community.

I've spent enough time in real estate communities outside of the Rain and the difference is clear.

Most of them feature pundits who make their living doing the Chicken Little routine about the current disruptor that is going to destroy real estate business as we know it.  Yawwwwwn....

Referral groups that claim to be brand agnositic, but the reality is proof against the claim.

Ask a question and get 20 AYB responses (not that sometimes that isn't the EXACT right answer).

The only real estate Facebook groups I still participate in are groups that were formed by ActiveRain members.  Just like ActiveRain itself, they may not be as active as they once were, but the bonds are still there.  I'd give any of those people a referral without a second thought.

Scrolling the blog roll I can find solid information about marketing techniques, real estate war stories, the latest trends, thoughts about the business, all without excess drama (mostly).  Some faces have been here for many years, and other new members just now finding the Rain.

Have a question?  The Q&A section is a great place to get input.

Do it right and you've got a network that spans the U.S. and Canada.

The positive far outweighs the negatives, and that brings me back to this community day after day.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Bill & Liz aka BLiz

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - ActiveRain has never been perfect.  Life is about choices.  For some of us, it "fits" within our routine.

Admittedly, it's a part of my day for multiple reasons, why others participate or don't does make me wonder at times but not for too long.

Bill - Liz and Bill Spear - thank you.  Likewise.

A variety of purposes in the Rain. Some have hired help, post that listing/market report, turn off comments and on their way.  Others looking for the social, others for a mix.  To each their own as long as they stay within the boundaries of expected behavior.  Glad people such as yourself are here on the regular to give a flavor to the place.

Good moring Bill,

No platform is perfect and certainly not Active Rain but you are right...its all about the people and what they have to offer. I know exactly who I'd send a referral. No negative nellies and if you can't play nice in the sandbox you won't be working with any of my clients!

Part of why AR became our go to choice for referrals.  Personality and approaches are evident, and that looms large in who I trust with my own reputation on a referral.

It is definitely the people, so many good people, who are supportive and cooperative as well.

That was one of the things that caught my attention early on, how helpful people were.  I was used to other agents in our local office being "proprietary" about how to build business.

Time? People? Time to write a blog. I think I will. By the way what is a vacation? When you don't have to look at a clock. Jeff 😀

Jeff, My last real vacation other than visiting family for holidays was in 2018.  Looking forward to retirement and finally getting some travel in.

It's hard to believe it's been 18 years since many of us old timers have been hanging around in the rain!  What a great journey it's been.  And I for one am very happy to have met and continue to meet many rainers in person and we've all become great friends. But even not having met others in person, it still feels like we're great friends.  I see it as truly a gift - that's what AR is to me!

We have literally watched young kids and grandkids get all the way to college since we joined.  How did that happen so quickly??

I know....crazy thinking of watching the kids grow up.  Our first grandchild is only 16 so she wasn't even born yet. Zoom....time flies by fast!

Yes indeed, the people - the information they share, the funny stories they tell, the way they jump in when a member is in need. Gotta love AR.

We are in the people business. Like busy bees we keep producing. Just like bees are essential for our ecosystem, good ActiveRain members are beneficial for growth and opportunities. Some leave, never to buzz back; others stick around and enjoy the communication, networking, education, inspiration, and quickly excel in learning whether that is with innovative technology or a novel idea.

Occasionally there are disrupters in our food chain. They may bite, sting, become toxic, or sometimes annoying. But they usually don't last long. Personally, I have learned a lot from many people here on ActiveRain.

Bill & Liz - thank you.

Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP great analogy!  Only a few wasps in this community, and they tend to make it apparent and we can detour around them as we need to.  With the rest, we can maintain a positive community worth spending our time.  I've gained a lot from participating over the years, and plan to continue doing so.

Liz and Bill Spear - I like bees! I love honey!!! As for wasps, they tend to always want to go to war with me. I just don't understand them! Being a part of a positive community is comforting and joyful! Life is too short. Our society benefits from eagles that soar higher than the pesty wasps.

Have a wonderful day!

Yeah, I agree. Nothing is perfect but there’s enough diversity of thought and person that everything makes for a good time. .

True, AR isn't perfect.  In some ways better than it used to be (site stability for instance), but with fewer active participants.  Despite that, the culture continues onward.

Good points as people buy from people they know and trust. People make referrals to people they know and trust.

It's one of the things I like about blogging.  There's a good opportunity for consumers and agents to see who we are, how we do business, etc.  Ideally, the calls we get after that are committed to working with us.

I have received leads from AR. Also, I still believe it's good for SEO with linking back to my website.

I still get potential clients from blog posts over a decade old.  And AR helps drive people to our IDX pages, so all the better.

Home again, home again...

There's no question that we keep coming back due to the connections that we've made over the years.  It's just one of the side benefits of being a Rainer.

The major benefit continues to be the fact that Active Rain is working 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks per year, and generates public inquiries, as well as direct referrals from fellow Rainers.

If I hadn't been getting business ... I would have stopped spending time here years ago.

(btw... I love to see that you've loosened-up and adopted 'gasholes'.)

I love the fact that old evergreen posts will continue to work for me as long as this site exists and we're in the business.

And gasholes...twice in the last month, I'm going WILD!!! :)

It's the people for me as well, I like to see what is going on, haha.  I don't spend a lot of time in the Rain, but I do pop in daily and spend a bit of time checking out the blog posts, a quick visit to the Q&A, and some interaction.

AR is a great way to keep up with the pulse of real estate across the country, pick up tips that we can bring to our local market, and refer with confidence.  And for what we gain, it doesn't take that much time out of our day.

There are always some familiar faces, and some new ones.  I think part of the challenge for the site is converting newer members to longer term members.

Liz and Bill Spear You hit the nail on the head.  It's been 15 years for me, and while I may not be here daily, I always come back.  Anything I wanted to know about I came to AR first.  Referrals - without even a doubt.   It's a truly wonderful platform.

Oct 18, 2024 06:31 PM

We changed from being brand focused to AR focused on giving out referrals long ago.  This place gives us more insight than any directory could.
