Pi-vot!!

Sad, but true.  It seems that nobody really wants regular non-electric pianos today.

Today I supervised as "Junk Relief" came to pick up and junk a baby grand piano that is being left behind by my seller.  The seller no longer wants it, and does not want to pay to move it, and the buyer of her property does not want it either, so they want it removed.

Doesn't sound like a real problem, does it?  Just put an ad in your local marketplace (electronic or otherwise) and advertise an inexpensive, or even free piano.  Add in one complication, this piano lived in the 3rd floor penthouse of a walk-up building. Even when we offered the piano for free, we had no takers.

Finally, as the end of the month is approaching we had to take  desperate measures and called several junk companies... and STILL... even they turned us down.  One said that they would charge $1,400.00 to remove it (well, the seller said she's rather burn the whole place to the ground before paying $1,400.00 for some to come and take her free piano... she was half kidding, but only half).  The second junk company simply refused to take it.

Finally, Junk Relief agreed, for a much more reasonable fee... sent out four guys... and spent an hour taking the piano apart and carting it down three flights of stairs.

This counts as full-service real estate. Why did this remind me of a vintage "Friends" episode?

That is sad, Alan.
It seems like someone would want the piano.

You'd certainly have thought so.. but this is not the first piano I haven't been able to sell/give away.

OMG Alan- I am laughing so hard and replaying the scene from Friends in my head. Everytime I think of it I start laughing again. When we moved from FL I discovered many places don't want what we (and others) have because they've been inundated with books,DVDs, etc.

Good evening Alan,

Thank goodness for Junk Relief! Coordinating all this definitely falls under the distinction of full service Real Estate. You gave us a visual when you mentioned the Friends episode. Like Kathy Streib I can't stop laughing!

It's amazing all of the little "extras" that we do for our clients.

Alan May  I think it is so sad. I knew a mover I used; he wanted me to let him know about pianos for his personal use. True story - I had a musician no one would take the beautiful piano down the small elevator; he did it - I love him - later, I had another piano, and no problem piano. First floor, right next to sliding glass doors YES, he wanted it for himself - next thing I knew was charged $800

It really is sad.  Nobody wants a piano that you can't plug in, these days.

Hello Alan - some half-kidding remarks can be incredibly sad in some ways.  There is an argument that can be made that we "collect" too much stuff.   That familiar tune may not carry the same weight in each situation.

Life can be complicated.  And it's a discussion that can be carried over (and over) for a long time.  Kinda like piano practice. . .

Piano practice can go on interminably.

I'm glad you were able to find someone to move that piano, but it's a shame it was thrown away. I'd love to have a regular upright piano instead of the electronic one I have but then I'd have to get it tuned on a regular basis so for now, I will keep the electric one.

... and that's part of the reason that nobody wants a regular piano, these days.

No surprises here,   I have experienced the same on several occasions.  My mom had one in her basement which my handyman took part piece by piece and scrapped it.

That was such a memorable scene. While the fictional friends lived in the West Village of Manhattan- in the real world Manhattan we have services such as the New York Couch Doctor - who disassembles and reassembles your couches (and possibly other furniture) for moves. Yes- it's a real service.  Actually...there are several firms that do this now.

As to the Piano - I have seen moves where the movers shut down the block and have a crane hoist up the piano through the window of the apartment. Of course- we also have Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center- so professional grade piano's are not so out of the norms.

We also have 111 West 57th St, aka Steinway Tower located on Billionaire's Row where the base of the building- the first 16 stories is Steinway Hall - the former store and recital hall for Steinway and Sons. The new tower is built on top of the landmarked building as a supertall residential condo skyscraper- 91 stories in total (84 stories functional), at 1,428 ft tall. It's considered one of the skinniest skyscrapers in the world- and was completed 2 years ago.  Despite the supertall status- the building contains just 60 apartments...which jives with the Billionaire's Row status. There are currently 8 apartments listed for sale ranging from $15.75m to $49m.

In this case there was no money to afford to hire a crane, just in order to "junk" a piano.  As it was they balked at paying the junk guys to remove it... (and I kind of understand that)... but it had to be removed, and someone had to do it.
