Dia de Los Muertos Celebration in Carlsbad 2024

Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch Park is a beautiful venue to visit in Carlsbad, and a very special resource for the community, with a number of special events during the year. One of the fun events is the annual 2-day Dia de los Muertos Celebration, the “Day of the Dead.” This event is free as is the kids craft activity on Saturday.

This popular Mexican tradition, around Halloween time, is a celebration of life. It’s a time when the spirits of the departed return to visit their families on October 31 and leave on November 2. I have seen several different interpretations of this holiday, as well as dates, when looking online.

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about the Day of the Dead.

Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated with favorite foods and drinks of those who have departed, and decoration of altars – ofrendas - with special objects, photos and marigolds, to remember and honor the dead.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 2

Take a tour between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm of the Adobe Hacienda to see the festive decorations and the “ofrendas” (traditional offerings) for film star Leo Carrillo, his wife, Edith, and their daughter, Antoinette, who spent time there.

There will also be a special craft activity for kids on the side porch.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 3

The Dia de los Muertos Celebration at Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch Park continues from 10 until 3 pm.

You will be able to tour the Hacienda and enjoy the traditional decorations, and see the “ofrendas” (offerings) for the Carrillo family.

Hi George Souto

Day of the Dead is certainly different from the traditional Halloween and more meaningful.

The Dia de Los Muertos celebration at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park sounds like a meaningful and beautiful event, honoring traditions that bring families together to remember loved ones. The historic setting adds a unique charm to this cultural experience. It's a wonderful way for the Carlsbad community to engage with both history and tradition.

Hi Dennis Neal

I've been to several Dia de los Muertos events and they are lots of fun. The Leo Carrillo Ranch Park is a very special place in Carlsbad and a wonderful venue for this event - I've been to other events but not this one.

Hi Jeff- I've seen many Dia De Los Muertos items in our area at the local grocery stores. I've never been an event that celebrates that day, though.

Good morning, Jeff... I'm all about maintaining cultural traditions like this one. And I understand the underlying meaning of this day for people of Mexican heritage. Having grown up in a German Lutheran family, for me the day is All Saints Day, which I learned is celebrated throughout many European countries. Both traditions "honor" the dead.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker

I am certainly familiar with All Saints Day as well.

Good morning Jeff. Other than what I hear on the news yearly, not as familiar with the celebration as I should be and it is a big thing here in the Chicago area. Thanks for the heads-up!

Hi Wayne Martin

I suspect there are plenty of people who may not be familiar with this celebration or its meaning.

Hello Jeff - traditions live (and die) all around us - well, so to speak and not too gravely either.  Dia de los Muertos may be better known in some communities, but understanding history can reveal much.  Thanks for sharing some insight into the how Carlsbad California celebrates.
