Top 5 Plumbing Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Plumbing is one of those things that most people don’t think about—until something goes wrong. While professional plumbers are the go-to for complex issues, there are some basic tips every homeowner should know to avoid costly repairs or emergencies. These tips can help keep your plumbing system running smoothly and save you a headache in the long run.

1. Know Where Your Main Water Valve Is

It sounds simple, but many homeowners don’t know where the main water valve is located. In an emergency, such as a burst pipe, being able to quickly turn off the water can prevent significant damage to your home. It’s often located in the basement, crawl space, or near the water meter.

2. Prevent Clogs Before They Happen

Clogs are one of the most common plumbing problems. An easy way to prevent them is by being mindful of what you put down the drain. Avoid pouring grease or oils down the kitchen sink, as they can solidify and cause blockages. Use a drain screen in the bathroom to catch hair, which is a common culprit for clogged drains.

3. Fix Leaky Faucets Right Away

A dripping faucet may not seem like a big deal, but it can waste a lot of water over time. According to the EPA, a leaky faucet dripping at one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water a year. Fixing leaks not only conserves water but also helps lower your utility bills.

4. Be Careful with DIY Plumbing Projects

While it might be tempting to fix everything yourself, some plumbing jobs are better left to the professionals. Mistakes can lead to bigger problems. For instance, improperly installed pipes or fittings could result in leaks or even burst pipes later. If you're unsure, it’s always safer to call in an expert.

5. Insulate Your Pipes

Cold weather can wreak havoc on your plumbing. Insulating your pipes helps prevent freezing during winter, which could lead to burst pipes and expensive repairs. It's an easy and affordable way to protect your home, especially in colder regions.

For homeowners, knowing a few basic plumbing tips can save time, money, and stress. If you're maintaining your property or even considering upgrading to a new home, plumbing is just one of the many things to keep in mind. For those looking into real estate, you can explore listings on sites like Arizona Resource Realty, which offers a variety of properties for sale.

By following these tips, you’ll have a better understanding of your home’s plumbing system and be prepared to tackle minor issues or prevent them before they escalate.

When selling I also tell them to check under sinks. Fix any leaks and make repairs if any damage occurred to cabinets.
