25 HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

FOR CHARLOTTE AREA KIDS, PARENTS, HOMEOWNERS, & PETS

“There is a child in every one of us who is still a trick-or-treater looking for a brightly-lit front porch.”

... Robert Brault

Halloween is just one week away. Halloween can turn from being a happy and fun holiday into a dangerous one in a blink of an eye. Follow these 25 tried and true tips and you'll be sure to have a safe and happy Halloween. These tips will help you and your little ghosts and goblins have a safe, fun, and fright-free Halloween -- one with more treats than tricks!

SAFETY TIPS FOR CHARLOTTE AREA KIDS

  1. Trick or Treat only in neighborhoods you are familiar with.

  2. Trick or Treat only at a home's front door and never go to the back of a house.

  3. Don't go to dark houses.

  4. Carry a bright flashlight (and make sure the batteries are fresh and check to make sure it works before heading out).

  5. Go to the bathroom before setting out to trick or treat.

  6. Don't let your costume be a tripping hazard by letting it drag on the ground; make sure your shoe laces are tied tight, as they can be a tripping hazard too. Wearing comfortable shoes can help alot too!

  7. Stay on sidewalks; walk don't run. No sidewalks? Then be sure to walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic. Always check for cars before crossing a street.

  8. Put your phone away... don't walk and look at your phone... stay alert.

  9. Don't pet any animals in the neighborhood that you don't know.

  10. Carry a spare bag for your "treats" in case yours breaks.

  11. Don't forget to be polite and say thanks for the treats!

  12. Don't eat any of the treats until you bring them home.

Halloween Safety Tips For Kids

SAFETY TIPS FOR CHARLOTTE AREA PARENTS

  1. Buy flame-retardant costumes. Add reflector strips.

  2. Accompany younger children as they trick or treat.

  3. Older children on their own should be equipped with a watch that glows in the dark, a fully charged cell phone. Set an alarm on the watch or cell phone to alert your child when it's time to stop and come home.

  4. Make sure your older children who are unaccompanied trick or treat in groups. And be sure to know who they are going out with and where they plan to trick or treat.

  5. Make sure your children know not to eat any candy until they've brought it home for you to inspect for possible tampering or food allergies. You might want to limit how much candy they can eat on Halloween night to avoid stomach aches later on.

Halloween Safety Tips For Parents

SAFETY TIPS FOR CHARLOTTE AREA HOMEOWNERS

  1. Clear your front yard of anything that could be a tripping hazard--rakes, garden hoses, flower pots, dog toys, kid toys, etc.

  2. Illuminate your front walk and steps leading to the front door.

  3. Real candles could be a safety and fire hazard in outdoor decorations on Halloween night. Avoid these or place them well away from where trick or treaters will be walking. Just in case, have a fire extinguisher at the ready.

  4. If you're driving in/through your neighborhood, drive extra slowly and watch carefully for young children who can run out into the street.

Halloween Homeowner Tips

SAFETY TIPS FOR CHARLOTTE AREA PETS

  1. Don't leave any pets outside in your yard on Halloween.

  2. Make sure your dog or cat doesn't "escape" through the front door when you are handing out treats.

  3. Don't feed any people treats to dogs or cats. Ingredients like chocolate can be downright poisonous.

  4. If possible, contain your dog or cat in a closed off room so they don't get frightened by all the activity and costumes.

Good morning Nina. Great list. When we lived in Florida we would get somewhere around 200 trick or treaters. In downtown Chicago, nine. Now out in civilization once again we have no clue but are prepared. Enjoy your day.

Michael Jacobs ha, ha, ha, Michael... nor mine. Even in NY City we'd just go out and trick or treat without adult supervision and no issues.

These are all great tips! At the moment, none of them apply to me as we don't get trick or treaters and don't have kids/grandkids who are going to be trick or treating. And now they have those Trunk or Treat things where children don't even go to houses. Times change!

Oct 24, 2024 05:28 AM

Kat Palmiotti good morning, Kat... that actually makes me feel a bit sad... I remember well the days of trick or treating as a kid... and I love seeing the kiddos trick or treat in my neighborhood each year.

Nina, All of these are very important tips. Last year we had so many trick and treaters than ever before. They didn't just show up 1 or 2 at a time, they showed up with at least 20 kids at a time!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 good morning, Sheila... that's like an invasion when you have 20 kids all at once. The year after pandemic restrictions were lifted, we had tons of kids.

Good morning Nina,

These are great tips to keep our kiddos safe! Times are changing as I'm seeing fewer kids because they are going to their trunk or treats provided by their parents on their streets, the school or churches.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX hi Dorie... my neighborhood still sees a lot of kids trick or treating. But as I said to Kat Palmiotti, it makes me sad that fewer kids do this... some of my happiest memories from my childhood was going out to trick or treat with friends.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... so many of the safety tips are common sense... sadly many things happen on Halloween because common sense flew out the window.

Hi Nina,
When my brother and his wife were visiting this week, we were reminiscing about the times we went trick-or-treating as kids. I suspect your neighborhood gets a lot of kids looking for treats.

Oct 24, 2024 11:08 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Carol Williams hi Carol... yes... Halloween is BIG in Ardrey. First there's a parade through the neighborhood, then a supper for the kids at the Clubhouse after which they trick or treat up and down the streets. Typically it turns in a bunch of block parties.

Nina if I had young kids today, I would probably let them go trick or treating, BUT I would most likely not let them eat it, and replace it with candy I would purchase.  There are TO MANY WACKOOS out there.

Oct 24, 2024 12:11 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

George Souto hi George... the good news is that on the whole I haven't heard many issues about tainted candy... but I guess no one wants to take a chance. I'm so happy this is not something we ever had to worry about when I was a kid.
