I tell my buyers to not just listen to what the bank says you can afford. Make sure you can make the payments if something goes wrong for a few months. Do not over extend.

That huge disappointment is what one tries to avoid with buyers who insist on looking at homes before they get prequalified. They get really sad when they realize they want something way over their abilities.
