What kind of Ambassador are You?

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart Real Estate AZ Broker BR030809000

Today a long time business associate  of mine mentioned the term 'Ambassador of Positivity' in regards to an event she is now managing, as I did previously for many years. She wanted to go over a few things to make sure she was on a good track and wanting things to keep moving and shaking!

I knew there were quite a few 'Ambassadors of Positivity' on this committee.  And that made me stop, ponder a bit,  and think,  just what does that mean to be a positivity ambassador?

To me it means being  upbeat, encouraging, seeing the good in situations, open to new ideas, passionate, confident, giving, dedicated and of course positive!

What kind of person becomes a Positivity Ambassador?  And why are those  same people asked to take on that role quite often?

Leadership pops up in my mind first.  I think it begins with leadership of self first and then becoming a leader of others.  Being a leader doesn't happen over night. Oh no, not a chance of that!  And for sure there are going to be leadership 'flops' along the way, which can be huge opportunities - or not.  Becoming a  skilled leader is a learning process  that is honed over many years.  But once the leadership skill is in ones DNA it  can and usually lasts  for a lifetime.

People are drawn to positive leaders because of their infectious energy, their enthusiasm, their 'can do' attitude and their ability to see a project to it's  successful conclusion. These type of leaders  have an  unspoken strength about them and they lead with humility. They can sense what's right or what's wrong, what works and what doesn't work and easily guide people to  their goals and aspirations. Positive leaders make leading easy.  And negative leaders?  Well....we won't go there today with that side as it doesn't come out well.  Who wants to follow negative leaders? Not me.

Does anyone ever start out thinking - I want to be an Ambassador of Positivity?  Most likely not! But there are a lot of them out there, thankfully!

Are you an Ambassador of Positivity? Tell us how you got started on your path to being a positive leader?  And how and what others can learn from your experience of becoming an outstanding leader of leaders?  Thanks!

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. thank you kind sir!  Leadership is all about connecting with those that do want to grow and learn and create  awesome things together.  For those that don't....they've got their own path.  Let's concentrate on those that do.....just saying!

Anna, you are so right...leadership is not a 'born with' quality.  It takes hard work and focus as even leadership challenges change with the times.  m

Hi Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho I so agree it does take hard work and focus and the ability to continue 'shifting' when that needs to happen. That's part of being a great leader......knowing when and how to change things up and take a new direction.

Hello Anna - I remain a work in progress.  And that journey continues.  I participate.  And observe.  Listen as well.  I learn.  Something new or a bit different regularly. I make mistakes.  Far too many.  Too often too.  Yes, it continues along with all sorts of other stuff. . .

Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Hi Michael Jacobs I had to smile....aren't we all a work in progress!!  I know that for sure I am!  And mistakes to me are simply opportunities to do things differently and find a better way, don't you think? I can think of things I wish I knew enough to do things differently but alas, I didn't.  For instance, when I was still a heavy duty hiker 5/6 miles a day up and down the hills behind our home my feet began to hurt.  A pedicurist said....here try this shot.  I did and it solved things for a while..... for 8 years. But then the shots didn't work anymore.  Had I known that would be the result I would have found another route and/or stopped hiking so much. Did I learn from that.....you bet I did!  And I still hold hope that one day soon I can at least walk around the bottom of the preserve as it's so nice just to be out in nature....and meditate.  See what I mean by shift.....and being ok with it?

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - whenever such shifts occur, it can be wise to take a moment for thankfulness.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - this is an interesting topic. I think there are different types of ambassadors. Being a "positivity ambassador," is someone who leads by example and understands succession planning. Followers need their positivity ambassador to open up doors for others with encouragement for implementing new improvements for the greater good with confidence, and enthusiasm. But most of all, to know the role so well, they can teach it to others, and that person can take over seamlessly.

What kind of person becomes a Positivity Ambassador depends on how the role was given. For example, when working in Maine, as a bookkeeper, I worked directly with the Owner who managed the business end, the money. I even had access to the office safe and was responsible for everything related to this multi-million-dollar family-owned business. When he died, unexpectedly (just went out down the camp road for a run) I took over his responsibilities and taught his wife, the Owner who handled the People business, everything her husband would want her to know to continue to run the business. I even had to show her how to write a check and explain every single detail, passwords, combination to the safe, etc. That role that I assumed was the direct result of learning the ropes from the man who made the money and prospered in business. She hired me to come back to do the same job and I did it on my own, George's way, successfully. That business is still here today, many decades later, not because of me, but because the original owners trusted me and worked with me long enough to know I knew what to do, in case of an emergency.

Was I a positivity ambassador? That title was not given to me, but you see, the point is, a title is just a title, and title dies when a person dies or gives up, or there are changes. There are leaders that have the respect, ethics, and integrity who aren't the principal but know how important responsibilities are to get the job(s) done.

There are many training classes to become a leader, but not all trainees become effective leaders. The relationship between leadership style and types of people who assume leadership varies from company to company. I worked for 3 different Brokerage firms (all same company) and the leaders all completely different. High energy, sure. Did the company prosper? Not all! Some leaders were replaced. Some lost their license. Delegation skills are very important; so is the role of discipline. You're right, leadership doesn't happen overnight. Not everyone can be an effective leader. Learning is ongoing. Mistakes happen. Problem-solvers are the glue that keeps the business going.

I agree, people are drawn to positive leaders. How people interact with each other makes a big difference in whether or not success follows. Leading with humility is one of the most important factors that I know of. People avoid negative, authoritative leaders. First and foremost, the leader has to be a people person, and the people have to know they can trust the leader. Toxic people need to go. Good positive leaders foster good relationships.

Hi Patricia Feager, ABR,CRS,GRI,MRP for sure there are different kinds of ambassadors, each with their own strengths.

What a great story about the camp you worked at.....love it.  I'm am certain that lady was so grateful that you had the skill sets to teach her how and what to do that her husband handled previously.  That is awesome!

As for training leaders, I've been teaching and training leaders for decades. Guess you could say, I've seen it all.  And oh the stories I can tell!  I'm sure you've them as well!

And you're spot on about negative leaders.  I hear so much of that negativity these days and I think......do you hear what you're saying.  You can't be that stupid, can you?  Well, yup, they can be. Who on earth is going to follow a negative leader who is constantly blaming others or putting others down - instead of talking about just WHAT they can do to make it a better project, better result, win-win for all etc etc. etc.

I think being positive (or not) might be an innate trait, so we're either born with a sense of positivity or not. Turning that trait into being a positivity ambassador or leader happens when the person doesn't want to just go with the flow. And, they want to grow/expand/challenge themselves. That's my thought for this morning!

Nov 02, 2024 05:47 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Hi Kat Palmiotti  I'm not so sure we are born with 'it' or not.  I wonder if it's more a case where we either begin to learn from our parents, teachers etc or we don't.  Seems to me when we've got positive role models from the git go we've got a bigger chance of becoming a leader.  I know some folks that had terrible role models and holy smokes they can be really unhappy people.  I'm thankful I'm not like that!!

Good morning, Anna... I've always been a glass half-full kind of person... I hate negativity and if I sense it in people around me, I avoid them like the plague. And I believe that positivity is something that can rub off. My husband, being a bit of a dour Dutchman, was more of a glass half-empty person... he's changed after being around me for 35+ years.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker well you had your work cut out for you with a dour Dutchman!  Glad to hear after all the years he's figured it out and your positivity has worn off on him. That's a good thing for him....and you!  I My husband is extremely analytical and in the begging didn't have much of a clue how to 'connect' with folks on a deeper level.  Smart - yes. Thankfully he took on learning leadership skills on a higher level and within years shifted things around.  And that was all his choice (thankfully)!!  I think he saw how much fun I had and still be a leader and good at their game and wanted that world too.  Kind of funny know that I think back on those early years!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten don't I "get it!" Chris was always a popular person as he has a great personality and people loved working for him... but his instinct was always to lean towards a negative outcome, while mine was to lean positive.

Hi again Nina Hollander, Broker sounds familiar!!  LOL  People loved Gary too and he was a great boss.  But like  your husband....could go on the 'dark' side a bit.  But that was years ago....for both of us!!

Hey Anna,
What interesting questions. YOU are definitely a Positivity Ambassador. Am I?

I would say, "Yes," I am a Positivity Ambassador, and that's probably why we are good friends.

I don't recall any particular ambition to become a leader; I just always wanted to be the best I could be at whatever I did. I believe that when you are a positive person and want to help people, opportunities to serve in leadership positions happen. It's almost inevitable.

Nov 02, 2024 07:19 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Dear Carol Williams you know you don't even need to ask if you are a Positivity Leader!!  You've got POSITIVITY in spades!  And yes, we connected from the git go for that reason....plus add the sense of humor to the party!

Exactly on your 2nd paragraph.  I agree, folks don't start out with intention of being a 'leader' per se.  They simply want to be and do the best they possibly can. They've got that 'inner drive' and you know what I mean!  As in winning those sewing awards at a very young age!  Ring a bell!!!

Hi Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty hmmmm tell me more about what you're referring to.  When coaching and teaching agents there were times when I needed to talk about 'what didn't work' and then look at 'what will work' but I did that in a positive manner.  I am guessing that's what you mean, right?

Hi Anna- I choose to be positive!  As I've gotten older, I tend to distance myself from people who can only see the hole.  I listened to Nick Saban today on College Game Day and he remarked that he had to keep a positive focus for his team. It's a trickle down effect. This may be why one of my favorite movies growing up was Pollyanna. I choose to see the positive in something.

Nov 02, 2024 12:32 PM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Kathy Streib we are on the same page......it is a CHOICE to be happy!  Years ago when I was an instructor teaching 'leadership' we'd say often to those that were struggling with the concept......CHOSE AGAIN!  It's always a choice!! Most got it but there were always a few 'hold outs' that were going to see it their way...negative.

Had to smile about your favorite movie growing up being Pollyanna! Mine too!  As I got older people would call me "Pollyanna" and with that they meant - too happy.  At some point I figured out that by me simply saying - why thank you for noticing!  That got them off me in a negative way.  LOL Choose Again!
