TURNING BACK TIME TONIGHT!
Why Not Embrace The Extra Hour With These 10 Home Safety Tips?
Don't forget to turn your clocks back this Sunday, November 3rd as Daylight Savings Time 2024 ends. Enjoy that extra hour of sleep and then get to work on these 10 home safety tips. They shouldn't take more than an hour and you'll be plenty rested!
- Replace batteries in all your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Replace light bulbs in ceiling fixtures (as long as you're on the ladder anyway).
- Clean your smoke detectors.
- Make sure to test all the detectors after you've replaced the batteries to make sure they actually work.
- If your detectors are more than 10 years old, install new ones with fresh batteries. (But there are those who recommend you do it after 5 years.)
- Replace the batteries in all the flashlights in your home.
- Check your furnace and service it if necessary to keep it operating at optimal capacity as the weather gets colder.
- Check canned food supplies for seriously old "use by" dates and toss them.
- If you have a fridge with a filtration system, this is a good way to remember to change the filters.
- Replace heating filters all around the house, if you're not in the habit already of doing so every month or two. Your HVAC system will run much more efficiently.
By the way, if the old batteries that still have some life in them don't toss them. Save them to use in electronics, kids toys, etc.
If you haven't prepared a family emergency plan as yet, it might be a good idea to do so this weekend as well. Here's a link to FEMA's Family Emergency Plan that you can print and fill out. You just never know when it might come in handy and if/when it does, you'll be glad you took the time to do a family emergency plan. (Then be sure to update it in the spring when we turn our clocks forward again.)
ONE MORE THOUGHT: with an extra hour to spare tomorrow, it's the perfect opportunity to explore your home buying or selling options this year. If you're considering buying or selling a home in the Greater Charlotte region in the next two months or in 2025, I'd love an opportunity to earn your business, to exceed your expectations, and to show you why experience matters and how:
