Thankful Thoughts…For Social Media Videos

When YouTube emerged back in 2005, for the life of me, I couldn’t grasp the idea that strangers would want to watch someone’s video.

What do I know????

Fast forward many years and here I am extolling the virtues of social media videos. We have a group in the Rain (YouTube Thursdays) devoted to social media videos.

I’m retired so why am I thankful for these videos?

First…I follow the uplifting videos…the ones that make me smile, laugh, open my mind to an amazing world, and applaud the many creative people in the world.

During our forced stay-at-home months in 2020, these short videos were especially helpful because they were like a window to the world for me.  (by the way, my time per day on Facebook is less than 5 minutes)

Have you seen Teddy
Warning dog lovers...you'll be hooked!

The second reason I like social media videos is that they are visual instructions on how to do something.  Larry turns to YouTube when he wants to learn how to assemble a generator system, replace the brakes on our Prius or use the many tools he has.

I’ve used YouTube videos for answers to a tech question and for something as simple as “How to clean a baseball hat.”

To have the luxury of turning to my phone or laptop every day and learn, discover, and laugh is what I’m grateful for.

This is my first entry in this month’s Thankful Thoughts: ActiveRain's November 2024 Gratitude Challenge 🍁🙌✍️ hosted by Debe Maxwell.

This is my favorite challenge of the year because it nudges us to give thought about the people, places, and things that we are thankful for.

AND I love reading the other posts for this challenge because it adds that third layer or dimension to who you are!!

How to videos are great sources of help! So are videos about locations I might want to visit. I'm not a fan of cooking videos - I'd rather just read the recipe. But yes, there is a place for online videos!

Kat Palmiotti I usually head to the cute animal videos...the ones that make me smile. Watch the dad video. They're amazing.

I do not even bother keeping manuals any longer. I just YouTube what I need. I had to change the AC filter in my car...I just googled and watched a video. Amazing.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I agree. Larry used YouTube videos to put together our generator system...work on the Prius breaks...and fix almost whatever brakes. Thank you to the people who take the time to make these.

Good morning Kathy,

Love your first entry into the November challenge! After Geno passed away I soon learned there where tasks he took care of that I never paid attention to! Changing the water filter in my refrigerator, descaling our Keurig! I went to YouTube and quickly found a how to video and was able to take care of those tasks! Easy peasy!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX Good for you!!!! Most people would have called someone. YouTube has so many helpful videos like that. When Larry worked on the brakes he took his iPad so he could view the video while he worked.

Good morning Kathy. YouTube was never my thing for many reasons. That said it is slowly drawing me in with its wealth of information. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I'll give you an example. Years ago the capacitors in our tv went out. Instead of spending hundreds to have someone replace them, he ordered what he needed from Amazon and fixed it for under $10.00.

Good Monday morning, Kathy.

Enjoy the videos and have an outstanding week.

I watched a helpful video for a medication that I am currently taking. It is the first time that a powder was prescribed for my ear infection.

Roy Kelley that is interesting!!! I'd never heard of powder for an ear infection either.  Hope you feel better!!! Is this related to the vertigo you've had/??

Hi Kathy ☺️ I too love watching video's to learn so much and too laugh and feel good! It would be fun in 2025 to get back into making  few, wouldn't it.  Or maybe you are already!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten When the pandemic hit and everyone was scrounging for a mask of some sort, I made a short video of how to make one from a small cloth. I sent it to family members. That was the extent of video making from me!!!

Hello Kathy - I missed this thankful post when you originally published it, but with a little searching it showed up today.  I admit my attention span often tells me if a video (social media or not) is worthy or not to watch so upfront knowledge of its length is important.

Not a big fan and video instructions.  Youtube in general is not easy for me to navigate.  Sometimes good is good enough for my uploads.  We learn so much when we make time to discover the depth of the app to make our life much easier to navigate.

Kathy Streib - I tried numerous times to learn how to do videos. Although, I can play what I did okay, I can't upload it to view it. I had many people, including people from different Title Companies try with my phone, and they can't figure how why or have been able to help. I've learned to live without it.

Good for you for being successful. Success is a good feeling.
