Tuesday’s Thoughts…The Right Kind of No

Has someone told you they would do something and then backed out…didn’t show up…or complained to everyone about doing it?

The right kind of no is better than the
wrong kind of yes.

Unknown

When I saw this quote, it rang true with me. I jotted it down in my Drafts for Posts file in Google Docs.

Two posts, one by Larry and Sheila Agranoff which spawned a post by Dorie Dillard, reminded me of the above quote.

We’ve all had vendors who’ve assured us they could do the job. "You’re on the schedule. No problem."

And then….

Oops…Can’t make it. They were too booked and ran late.

That was the WRONG kind of “yes.”

So what would the RIGHT kind of “no” have been?

We would love to help but we’re booked for two weeks. If you can wait, we can be there.

Sales people want to please their customers.  The thought of turning down a job or client is foreign to many.

We want to say “yes” when someone wants to hire us. However we know that their idea of a list price is far above the current market and they refuse to budge.

Those who’ve been in business for a bit have learned that you have to learn how to say the right kind of no.

The same holds true for our family members and friends and any other interactions we have.

Wouldn’t you rather they say the right kind of “no” than the wrong kind of “yes”?

Good morning Kathy. Quotes by the unknown are sometimes more impactful than the ones by known individual. This one is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Thanks! Enjoy your day.

hi Wayne Martin I liked this quote the minute I read it. It's simple but makes a lot of sense.

Good morning, Kathy... such an important point. When someone commits and then backs out, trust is lost and often forever. I remember attending a Brian Buffini conference years ago where he said it was as important to have a Do Not Do list as a To Do list so we could keep trust with people to whom we made commitments. I've never forgotten that.

Kathy, Thanks for the mention. We’re currently having a new lawn sprinkler system installed. The first contractor quoted an absurdly high rate, the second was a no-show, but the third was, like Goldilocks would say, just right!

LOL Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 that must be why they suggest getting 3 quotes. It's hard to believe (but yes I can) that someone wouldn't show up for an appointment.

Oh my gosh, that goes back to trust. If a company says they are going to do something and then they don't, I don't trust them and have no interest in working with them going forward. I would definitely respect one that was truthful up front. Geez.

Kathy Streib - I am so happy  you loved his presentation. He (and the entire Search & Rescue) does great things in our area. They have rescued people who wouldn't have made it if it weren't for them.

Kat Palmiotti I agree. I've also had friends tell me they'd show up but didn't I loved Anthony's presentation.

Hello Kathy - while off-topic of your post, whenever "NO" is part of the discussion, my mind typically goes in the direction of next opportunity.  And that certainly works when I hear of double-booking and scheduling mishaps.  While such things can certainly happen on occasion - it sounds more like an excuse than a valid reason when it occurs regularly.

Good morning Kathy,

Thank you for the mention. This is an important topic as sometimes we need to know when to say no. It's the right thing for everyone!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX I agree. I'd rather someone pass and tell me no or maybe another time.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I would much rather have someone tell me they can't do something or tell me they can but not until later then say "yes" and not show up.

It take time to build a good reputation but very little time to lose it. The wrong kind of "Yes" is way worse than an honest "No".

I think as we age, we grow to a stage in our lives where we are not so afraid to say NO. When we are younger we are striving to please others, and often say Yes, when we should say no or later.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 that's exactly how it is. We want to please others and say "yes" at work and with our friends.

Kathy, when I went to real estate school, they emphasized not to over commit if you cannot show up!    I have a listing that had a first listing agent that set them up for failure, list price WAY too high, and now they are still chasing the market down.

Joan Cox I can remember when we sold one of our homes, the agent we interviewed gave us a really high list price. Larry and I knew that would have over-priced our home. She thought that was what we wanted to hear.

Ooooh, I really like this post!  One very powerful thing I learned from a therapist is that "no" is not an answer that needs to be justified.

Ralph Gorgoglione I'm glad you like it, and your therapist is wise. I have a good friend and one thing I've always admired about her is that she was never afraid to say no and didn't feel the need to justify bit. She wasn't rude about it but politely said no.

Hello Kathy and back in my first year in Real Estate I would say yes when it came to over price listings.  Now I tell people "I don't want to list your house, I want to sell it"  but it has to be at a price I can sell it for.
