I Remain Thankful
For Wordplay
Another ActiveRain
November Challenge Post
Although I haven’t regularly or actively participated in sports, I have long enjoyed words. Sure, technically not a sport but word play can be practiced individually as well as in groups. And that’s part of the fun of it. At least in my opinion.
There are those who say you must be careful when speaking around children. They have big ears. Did my parents have me in mind when I heard, overheard and inferred such things as a child.
Yes, I remember a discussion one summer as a child when my aunt (my dad’s sister) was talking to a friend of hers. I don’t think they had any idea I was listening as I was busy doing kid sort of things, but I heard enough to get the gist of their conversation. Michael is a lot like his grandfather, he doesn’t say a lot. They continued - Of course, Joe (my grandpa) can’t get a word in edgewise with Mildred (my grandmother) as his wife.
Yes, my grammy was outspoken and opinionated. My grandfather was more of a listener. His profession as a barber kept him busy as an attentive audience asking appropriate questions as necessary to keep the conversation flowing and customers returning for their no-fuss haircuts. It seems he had a good head for that. Cue the rimshot.
In addition to grandpa-jokes (older than any dad joke, right) plus puns and witticisms, he was definitely one to study for playing with words. So, observing and listening started my appreciation of words including eventually having fun with them.
