Wordless Wednesday…When Words Are Important
Yesterday’s Zoom presentation by Anthony Palmiotti (Kat Palmiotti’s husband) opened a door on a topic many of us know very little about but found extremely interesting.
Anthony is a Search & Rescue volunteer for their area of Kalispell. He mentioned there is often a lack of cell service in some of the areas and it reminded me of a time when Larry was on his wilderness expedition in the Everglades.
Everything he needed had to fit on (or in) his kayak including 14 gallons of water, food, tent and other necessities. He and a friend were gone for 12 days.
There are no convenience stores where they went. And…no cell service.
A friend told us about SPOT Satellite. While he could not make calls on it, he could send pre-written texts to my number. I received a text every morning and night with coordinates of his location.
Our friend’s number was programmed into the device and if needed, he would be able to take his boat to the GPS coordinates to reach Larry.
More importantly, if he needed immediate help he could press SOS and the nearest emergency responder would be contacted
I learned that it wasn’t just for those going into the wilderness. Those going out of the country, hunting, hiking, boating…any place where cell service may be spotty…used SPOT.
SPOT has other products such as one that has two-way satellite messaging.
You may never have a need for this but when words are important, this may be just what you need.
