Friday Fun…Your Favorite Must-Have Dish

It’s planning time for our family Thanksgiving dinner. The number this year is, as they say, fluid, however I'd guess at least 30.

We’ll have the usual turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and more desserts than you could ever eat. And, yes, we’ll have some healthy green vegetables and fruits. And because this is Texas, I’m sure tamales will make an appearance.

Everyone wants to bring something!  I let them know that if there is a family dish or tradition they would like to include, feel free to bring it.

So for some Friday Fun…share with us…

1.What is your must have dish at Thanksgiving?

2.What would you be happy NOT to see at your Thanksgiving table (besides the relative you don’t like..LOL)?

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 really, is she bringing the turkey???   We'll have ham and turkey. If I had another oven and another large fridge, I could do the whole dinner (except the dressing!)

Hello Kathy - as I was reading your post today, my mind started wandering.  One of those first stops was cranberry sauce.  And then the first comment I read is from Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 who like anything but that.  Thanksgiving is about more than food, isn't it?  🦃🍽🦃

Hi Michael Jacobs for me, it's about the family coming together...that said, it's about the only time of year when I get cranberry sauce!!!

Kathy Streib - while I appreciate it for Thanksgiving, cranberry sauce seems to enhance post-Turkey Day leftovers.  In my opinion, it's an underrated dish.

Good morning Kathy. Our group will be small. My son and his family and his motther-in-law. My son does not eat turkey and will grill himself a filet. Otherwise the normal turkey and trimmings meal. My must haves are cranberry sauce and stuffing. The rest fills out the plate. Enjoy your festivities.

Hi Wayne Martin Larry likes the after Thanksgiving casserole I make from all of the leftovers. I put everything...that includes the cranberry sauce...layered in a casserole dish and bake it!!!

The dish that is a must have is probably scalloped potatoes that I make or my son makes.  My daughter is going to her in-laws and she will make scalloped potatoes there for them.  This year we are going to San Francisco with my son and his boys to see my husband's sister and brother who are out there with their families.  My sister-in-law's husband is having surgery so he probably can't do stairs, they are remodeling their house so they can't host Thanksgiving Dinner.  My huband's brother just lost his wife of 70 years and his house is filled with art (and stairs) so we can't go there for Thanksgiving dinner (even with me cooking most of it) so I think we are going to go out for dinner.  I hate the idea of Thanksgiving in a restaurant - not the experience I want for my grandsons - but I remind myself that Thanksgiving is not just about the meal (even though those holiday meals are really important to me>) - and putting a smile on my face is my gift to my husband.

Lise Howe I'm still my head around your brother-in-law and his wife who were married 70 years. It sounds like this may be a tough holiday for you. I've spent just two Thanksgivings out. We flew into KC one year on Thanksgiving Day. Everything...even the Chinese restaurants...were closed. We ended up at a sports bar.

Brian England it really is and I love it. I grew up in a  "the more the merrier" house so I'm always happy to set another place at the table.

Good morning, Kathy... what to have or not have at my Thanksgiving Day table is something I've given no thought to in years. Chris and I go to the Ballantyne Hotel on Thanksgiving for their Thanksgiving Day Buffet and I get to pick and choose from all sorts of options and desserts. But I will say, I could care less about stuffing... I didn't like stuffing as a kid and don't like it today as an adult. Of course, eliminating stuffing would make lots of people unhappy. I could also live without mashed potatoes... I like food I can chew. When I did cook Thanksgiving dinner (very rarely) I would roast potatoes. And when I tell you that I've never had a pumpkin pie at any of my Thanksgiving dinners, you'll definitely know I'm weird@! :)

Nina Hollander, Broker you crack me up!!!  I am not a pumpkin pie person but I love all of the side dishes for Thanksgiving. To me, the turkey is a side dish.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... and I'm all about the turkey! And of course, dessert so long as it isn't pie.

Hi Lauren Williams, CPO I love sweet potato casserole with marshmallows. Someone usually makes them but not me!  I had to click on the Ube Potato link. I'm going to look for it!! (I have to make sure someone will bring sweet potato casserole)

I do not have any must have dishes but I always enjoy turkey, dressing and cranberry sauce as well as creative vegetable dishes. And, I would be pleased with a slice of pie for dessert.

The not to see dish is easy jello salad. A dish I must have, well my Mom had the best sausage meat stuffing, I could eat that all on its own, cooked inside the turkey it was just delicious. Darn now my mouth is watering.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I'm with you on the jello salad. Your mom's stuffing sounds like I could eat that by itself too. We always had the stuffing cooked outside of the turkey but I can remember having it once when it was actually stuffed in the turkey. I remember how moist it was!!!

Well I always do the main meat and cheese noodles since I host.  I guess I could do without cranberry sauce and I have to have gravy for my turkey and mashed potatoes or I can't eat them.

Norma J. Elkins ok...what are cheese noodles??? It sounds good!!!  Actually if you put gravy on anything it makes it better.

for me it's corn.  Tammy's family never had corn before me, but now we do.  I could do without anything cranberry, but the rest of them eat it.

Don Baker I love corn but I don't recall having it for Thanksgiving. Although, a friend used to make the best corn casserole.

Hi Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I'm not a huge turkey fan unless it's a turkey sandwich but I'm also watching the bread I eat. (life is boring when you get older) I'd be happy with mashed potatoes and gravy and some stuffing.

Hi Kathy:

Still working on some plans but expect both daughters and their families. A number of people are vegetarian so there will be plenty of mashed potatoes, green beans and other vegetables. Homemade cranberry sauce is also on the request list. I can't imagine having bananas or pineapple at Thanksgiving but they are on my do not eat list.

Enjoy your weekend!

Jeff

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS just curious, do you never eat bananas or pineapple??? I'll make a dish called scalloped pineapple which everyone loves. It uses crushed pineapple. The joke around our home growing up was my mother made homemade cranberry sauce and someone always brought the kind out of a can. My uncle would tease her up and down.

I used to say the obvious, Turkey. However, I seem to have gotten tired of dry and luke warm turkey over the years. It is a chore for the preparer for a large family, to cook it right without overcooking and making it dry. People do not show up on time and one has to carve the turkey (time consuming) and warm things up so it all takes time. I like the mashed potatoes, gravy adnstuffing and hot! Everything tends to sit around so it is delivered luke warm. For me, a standing rib roast, hot hot hot! Jeff

It is pretty much the same here every year since I can remember...

turkey, stuffing (recipe originally from Rick's mom), gravy, whipped potatoes, butternut squash, corn, cranberry sauce (both whole and jellied). Sometimes there is a green veggie. Apple pie, pumpkin pie and one or two different desserts.

We only host every other year. On the off years it is just the two of us and the menu just not change.
