Throwback Thursdays: The Aqueduct Centennial Garden in Los Angeles...

Here is a bit of Los Angeles history or should I say a tid bit of Los Angeles history.

www.endrebarath.com

Have you ever been to the corner of Riverside Drive and Los Feliz Boulevard in Los Angeles? This part of Los Angeles is considered Los Feliz.

It is walking distance to the Los Angeles River and most Angelinos consider this the shrine to the "Father of the Los Angeles Water System", if you said William Mulholland, you were right.

www.endrebarath.com

The William Mulholland Memorial Fountain was designed by Walter S Claberg, and was dedicated in 1940 five years after Mullholand's death.

If you decide one day to stop by and if you look at the Granite Bolder you will read the following inscription:

To William Mulholland
1855 - 1935
A penniless Irish immigrant boy,
Who rose by the force of his industry,
Intelligence, integrity and intrepidity
To be a sturdy American citizen, a
Engineering genius, a whole-hearted
Humanitarian, the father of his city’s
Water system and the Builder of the
Los Angeles Aqueduct:
This memorial is gratefully dedicated
By those who are the recipients of his
Unselfish bounty and the beneficiaries
Of his prophetic vision.

So if you ever hear people talking about William Mulholland, or if you drive on Mullholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills you will now have a better understanding of who he was and what the name means.

That would be quite a legacy to be the father of the LA city water system and the LA Aqueduct!  Even I have heard of Mulholland Drive but I cannot remember why!!

Nice history post Endre Barath, Jr.

Love the inscription on the plague. This is a testimony to those who believe and work hard to make their beliefs/dreams come true. Always good to learn more about areas and people who built those areas.

Endre, thanks for sharing such an interesting piece of history.  A water system is vital to any city so I can understand why the city wanted to publicly honor him.

Thanks for your post Endre. Water is so important to Los Angeles and Mulholland. In the desert we have a very respectful attitude towards water. Water in the desert in  a wash or water retention basin or the sound of it on a roof is not seen or heard of often. I think of the 5th California Infantry that marched on foot from LA to Yuma during the Civil War and then pursued the Confederates out of Arizona after chasing them from Yuma along the Gila River and on to Tucson, pulsing 100 men at a time, not exhausting the water supply to wait for the water to be drawn from shallow wells as the water of the river ran underground. Water was important to the pioneers as it is now.
