This post is somewhat informative as well as asking for input of what has worked for you. Each year at Waikoloa Vacation Rentals we try to support 2-3 nonprofits on the Big Island of Hawaii where we are. Most nonprofits we support we simply support by donating money so that is relatively simple. This year we are supporting DNA Basketball Academy, which is a basketball club in Waimea.
I also help this organization so other than donating money have been trying to set up different ways to raise money. The club has put together some of the best girls and boys basketball players on the Big Island of Hawaii and those teams have been invited to be a part of the UA Future National Circuit. This circuit includes a trip to Seattle, Phoenix, and Cincinnati next year. While on these trips, the youth do not just play basketball, but also tour college campuses and things of that nature to encourage them to excel in life. DNA Basketball Academy has always been committed to providing to the community regardless of financial standing and that continued when being a part of the circuit. DNA did not put together a team limited to players that their family can afford the trips, but also to those kids that are committed to the game and of good character that their families may not be able to easily afford it or it may be a strain on the family. Due to this and the circuit being three trips to the mainland we have been working on several fundraising opportunities.
We have successfully done several fundraisers:
1- Had the kids work concession stands at basketball tournaments for the younger kids in our community.
2- Had the kids sell beef jerky to friends and family and make a percentage off the sales.
3- FORC Restaurant was kind enough to partner with us on a prime rib dinner and the youth and families sold tickets and got a percentage of the sales.
We have also received several sponsorships from local businesses. This is really where my question comes in. When I talk to people about sponsorship they mention that a lot of good sponsorships come from realtors in your community. The few that I have contacted have not been interested. Have any of you sponsored a nonprofit in your community? If so, what made you interested in sponsoring them?
We are hosting a silent auction as well and have listed some of our sponsors on there, we let the basketball community know who the sponsors are, as well as celebrate them on social media so just looking for any other things that may be appealing to sponsors.
Looking forward to any insight you may have. As well as hope this post is helpful to anyone that finds this that is trying to help a nonprofit find ways to raise money.
