Thanksgiving is Better with an Organic Turkey on the Table

Choosing an organic turkey for Thanksgiving often appeals to those looking for a bird raised with fewer chemicals, better animal welfare practices, and an improved taste. Here are some of the main benefits:

  1. No Synthetic Additives: Organic turkeys are raised without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetic modifications in their feed. This reduces the risk of chemicals making their way into the meat you’re eating.

  2. No Antibiotics or Hormones: Organic turkeys aren’t given antibiotics or growth hormones, which some people prefer to avoid for health and environmental reasons.

  3. Better Living Conditions: Organic standards usually require turkeys to have more space, access to the outdoors, and a more natural diet, which can lead to a healthier, less-stressed bird.

  4. Environmentally Friendly: Organic farming methods often prioritize soil health, reduced pesticide usage, and sustainable practices, which can be better for the environment.

  5. Enhanced Flavor: Many people say that organic turkeys have a richer, more "natural" flavor. Since organic birds grow more slowly and live in less stressful conditions, the meat can be more flavorful and tender.

  6. Ethical Choice: For those concerned about animal welfare, organic options often represent a more humane choice, which can make the meal feel more aligned with a spirit of gratitude.

Though organic turkeys can be pricier, many find these benefits worth the extra cost for a holiday as special as Thanksgiving.

SO..... where do you find organic turkeys in the DC metro area?   Here are some suggestions:

Maryland

Good Fortune Farm - pasture raised, antibiotic, hormone, and animal by-product free turkeys. Call the farm directly to inquire about ordering details. 301-579-2105
18001 Horsehead Road Brandywine, MD  20613

Maple Lawn Farms - Their turkeys are consistently fresh, juicy, and very flavorful.  To order, fill in the request form on their web site.  No deposit is required.

Weber's Farm - Pasture raised, hormone free turkeys raised in open air shelters. Orderrs can be placed on their website and you can specify a size range.  A $20 deposit is required to reserve your turkey.
2526 Proctor Lane, Parkville, MD 21234

Virginia

Ayrshire Farm - Heritage turkeys raised certified humane and organic. As long as the turkey is ordered Thanksgiving week, the turkey is shipped fresh, otherwise, they are shipped frozen so time your order right.  Turkeys can be ordered on line and are $12 a pound this year.
21846 Trappe Rd, Upperville, VA 20184

Chicama Run Farm - free range turkeys that are raised antibiotic, hormone, and animal by-product free with non-medicated commercial feed. Their online ordering form is a bit limited about the size and timing that you can pick up your bird, so it would be best to call them.
14809 Purcellville Rd, Purcellville, VA 20132

Fields of Athenry Farm -  ($9.50/pound), pasture raised turkeys. You can order from their web site or call 703.300.5765.
38082 Snickersville Tpke., Purcellville, Va 20132

Happy Thanksgiving!

Or possibly no turkey at all.  After all, it's really all about the sides!

Hello Lise - I agree with Ralph Gorgoglione.  More than the turkey itself, the sides as well as the gathering itself add so much to this holiday celebration.

Thank you for this post.

Our food system needs to be freed from all of the poison that has been allowed and I am hoping the new administration will do just that.

Good morning, Lise... what a great take on a Thanksgiving post. This is something I don't worry about... Chris and I go out to eat on Thanksgiving as it's just the two of us since the friends to whose home we used to go on Thanksgiving in Charlotte have both passed away. The only Thanksgiving dinners I've ever done were when we lived overseas to which I invited my American friends. In my family, Christmas Eve was "my dinner." Thanksgiving was my "mother's dinner" and Christmas Day was my "aunt's dinner."

Hi Lise- more and more consumers are trying to include more organic and non-processed foods in their diets. I still feel that all of the processed foods we've had have added to the food allergies our children have.
