More Stuff Than Space -Get Help Moving

By

You are going to need some help when moving.

Moving can be both exciting and stressful. While the idea of a new place is adventurous, the tasks ahead are overwhelming. There are ways to simplify the moving process and get help when needed.

If you have more stuff than space in your new home, consider getting a storage unit. This way, you can keep things you don’t want to throw away and have a tidy living area.

To keep important papers safe, organize your documents in a folder. To make moving easier, group things like lease agreements, change-of-address forms, and packing lists together.

Don’t forget about your internet and cable! Set up these services ahead of time to avoid waiting. If it’s too hard, ask a tech-savvy friend for help.

Ask friends or family for good movers, cleaners, and helpers. Their recommendations can save you stress.

While moving, decide what to keep, donate, or sell to reduce clutter.

Make sure both your old and new home are clean before moving in. A deep-clean makes everything nicer.  Go ahead and hire a cleaning service.

If you’re selling your home, think about getting it staged professionally to attract more buyers.  If moving feels too hard, hire a professional organizer to help with packing and unpacking.

Moving can be overwhelming, but it can become more manageable and less stressful with the right support.

Storage units are the way to go, Margaret!  Especially, if you're getting ready to sell your home.

Hi Margaret- When consulting for an occupied home, I've always recommended a storage unit for all of the extras that are eating up space. You can look at it as an investment in getting your home sold!!!

Storage units can be beneficial if they aren't filled with items that need to be given away or discarded.

And if someone is thinking of moving in the distant future, why not get started now? It's even easier if items are sorted, eliminated, sold, put in storage way ahead of time!

Moving is not a fun thing at all when it comes to packing up our stuff and hauling it away, haha.  If I ever move again, I am definitely hiring people to do it for me.

I totally get this, Margaret. I've moved more times in my life than I can count. My last move was going from a 6,000 sf home to 3,300 sf. Lots of stuff to get rid of... but I did not spend a penny on storage. What I no longer wanted or needed went to someone who did. I know people who have maintained storage units for two decades and have no clue what's in them. They pay the equivalent of a monthly car payment to store unknowns! This always amazes me.

Nina Hollander, Broker,

Consider writing a book or at least a blog series about how you were able to reduce your stuff by 50%.

It could be a best-seller or a great informational piece.

Good morning Margaret. When we sold our home in Florida we needed a storage unit for the next nine years. Having just moved to our new home, no storage unit needed and my son is also using our home for storage and given up his storage unit. That said we gave much away along the way. Great advice. Enjoy your day.

Margaret I do not look forward to moving someday.  I have stuff that I keep that I cannot explain.  I should start making the choice to get rid of it, so when the day to move comes I am not stressing out.

George Souto,

It's a good idea to begin removing things you no longer need.

Hi Margaret,
You are so right; moving can be stressful. I've always reduced my stress a bit by hiring a moving company to move my stuff from one place to another and then hiring a cleaning company to do a deep clean. Deep cleaning is always a requirement on the move-in home as well.  Getting rid of stuff is something I hope to do long before any future move takes place.

Hello Miss Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400  - I have jet to work with a seller who has not grossly underestimated how long it would take them to go through things, and then sort for donation, recycle, throw away, etc.

People forget how much "stuff" they have,  and what's in the boxes in the attic.

"Oh, that is where I put them."

Or

"I forgot I had these."

Hello Margaret - the subjects of movement and stuff is definitely a supposition of many sorts of $^!+ hitting the fan.  And speaking of such, it's likely you'll find a fan hidden there too.  Yes, wondering again. . .

Margaret, this is so true!   My Parker homeowner thought he sold or got rid of enough, but found it wasn't when arriving in AZ.   He is still working towards a less-cluttered home.
