When Sigrid Rehrig, Emerald Coast Utilities initially approached Elli Gentile
Authority’s (ECUA) Education Programs Specialist and Maria Del Aguila, ECUA’s Digital & Social Media Coordinator, did a Behind the Scenes video at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF); she was unsure what to expect. She was embarrassed to admit she had never heard of it. Here’s a little background.
In 2016, Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (ECUA) opened a material recovery facility (MRF) and began operations, processing 25 tons per day of single-stream recyclables. The 53,000-square-foot facility was built adjacent to Perdido Landfill to help the local community hold onto valuable commodities.
Nearly nine years later, the facility sorts about 800 tons of materials a month, approximately 27 tons daily! Just over a year ago, the facility saw over 50%
the materials coming through were contaminated, meaning they could not be recovered and reused. Today, the contamination rate is less than 30%, so we are privileged to have Sigrid Rehrig here to provide us with additional updates concerning material recovery. We hope this will pique your interest in a field trip to see the facility. More to come on that. For more information on recyclables and everything happening at Escambia Utilities Authority.
As our newer members may not know, Rotary has always championed the value of Vocational Education/Training. The Rotary calendar has a month (January) designated explicitly for emphasis.
Great news for vocational programs! According to a very informative article in the Pensacola News Journal on August 23rd, Navarre High School students enrolled in the welding program will not have to leave campus for classes starting next fall.
Charlin Knight, Santa Rosa School District Workforce Education director, said the district will expand its Welding Technology Program to on-site training at Navarre High.
“It’s a high-demand elective for our high school students. There is always a waiting list, and with the on-site program, we can double and triple the class size,” Knight said of the program now offered at Locklin Technical College in Milton.
The expansion of Navarre’s welding program is a result of the school district being named a Space Florida Academy. On Aug. 1, Santa Rosa County District Schools was one of 23 Florida school districts to enter a partnership with Space Florida, the state’s aerospace finance and development authority, to begin implementing the Space Florida Academy Program.
The Space Florida Academy Program aims to connect students with the high-demand credentials and skills necessary to work in the aerospace industry—credentials that may not have been traditionally associated with the industry.

Rotary was started by four business people who wanted to help the city of Chicago. It has morphed into a worldwide philanthropic organization, topped by no one or no other organization. Google any city, add Rotary to the search, and see for yourself. Then check out any charity on Charity Navigator and see the money spent helping others compared to their leadership salaries. Oh, my. Unless you are filthy rich and can throw money away, this alone will have you giving to Rotary and nowhere else. If you are the average Joe or Sue and want to help people with the right resources, check out Rotary. Whether it is your time or money, you will love Rotary—Cantonment Rotary: New Year Full of Opportunities.
