Veterans Day is an annual State and Federal holiday for military veterans celebrated on 11th day of November. This year we celebrate Veteran Day on Monday November 11, 2024.
During May of 1938, a Congressional Act approved November 11th of each year as a legal holiday, a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be celebrated and known as "Armistice Day".
A man known only as Raymond Weeks of Birmingham, Alabama had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a Bill that Armistice Day was to celebrate all veterans. Congress amended the Bill on June 1, 1952, replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans” and it has been known as Veterans Day ever since.
