Today is Veteran’s Day. Many know that WWI ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Also, this day was originally called Armistice Day by President Woodrow Wilson. President Eisenhower, a Veteran of WWII, on October 8, 1954 issued the first Veteran’s Day Proclamation which established the holiday for the proper observance the day demanded.
Many Baby boomers had family members that fought in WWII. For myself, this included my father, my uncle and my grandfather. Then the Korea War followed by Vietnam. My husband is a veteran of that conflict and served a year in Vietnam. Since then, we continue to put our men and women in harm’s way.
Military service to one’s country is a huge commitment of grit and gratitude. Even in times of peace, these men and women may be called to “arms.”
President George Washington appeared to far reaching insight that extended through the decades.
“The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier was were treated and appreciated by their nation.”
