Each year, I make it a priority to attend the Beauty of Life Luncheon hosted by Hospice Austin. Held at the JW Marriott, 110 E. 2nd St. in downtown Austin, this event has become a cherished tradition for me. This year’s luncheon was particularly special, drawing over 1,000 attendees—an impressive sight with so many tables filling the grand ballroom! Even more remarkable, the event raised a staggering $1,000,000 in donations, all directed toward supporting Hospice Austin’s invaluable work.
I’m especially thankful to Rachel, my friend and representative from Independence Title, who ensures that tickets are always secured for herself, my daughter, and me. It’s a cause close to my heart and one I’m proud to support each year. Hospice Austin provided extraordinary care for my late husband, Geno, during the last four months of his life. Their kindness, empathy, and even moments of lightheartedness made an immense difference—not just for him, but for our entire family. They guided us through a deeply emotional journey with care and dignity, helping us navigate the difficult process as Geno approached the end of his life. The staff didn’t just provide care; they became an extension of our family during a time we needed it most.
This year’s luncheon featured the incredible Catherine Newman as the keynote speaker, and she did not disappoint. With humor and heart, she delivered a message that resonated deeply with everyone in the room. As a thoughtful touch, we each received a copy of her book, We All Want Impossible Things. It’s a beautifully written exploration of love, loss, and the everyday moments that make life extraordinary. |
I think Katherine Center, a New York Times bestselling author, summed it up best: “Catherine Newman sees the heartbreak and comedy of life with wisdom and unflinching compassion. The way she finds the extraordinary in the everyday is nothing short of poetry. She’s a writer’s writer—and a human’s human.”
Hospice Austin remains high on my list of worthy causes, and I will always be grateful for the compassion they showed to Geno and our family. Supporting them is my way of giving back, ensuring that others receive the same tender care when they need it most.
