Ask An Ambassador: A Trip Down Memory Lane

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

This is my last week as an engineer/real estate agent.  Friday is my last day filling the "engineer" part of my dual career life.  I'm cleaning out my cube and when you've been doing this as long as I have, you collect all kinds of tidbits.  Pictures of the non-digital variety complete with negatives, thank you cards, awards, device pieces from instrument lines I supported, old technology, it's all coming out of the file cabinets and drawers as I empty this cube for its future resident.  There are decisions to be made, what should I keep (and that's influenced with the thought that everything I keep will need to be moved to our new house next year, or gone through again and then tossed...so skip the repeat step, right?).

Realistically, the engineering part of my brain doesn't get unplugged Friday afternoon.  It's a skill set I've long used in my real estate work.  Analyzing data, pricing, assessing what works and what doesn't.  Where should I spend the limited time I have each day, what's the priority and what can be delayed?

If you've been blogging as long as many of us have, you're probably done some assessment too.  Most of what I blogged about in the beginning would never see daylight today.  Why?  Because those posts didn't bring in business and they had the lifespan of newspaper in the bottom of a birdcage.  I had to learn what worked and what didn't, what would have staying power, and what works for us more than anything else is niche blogging (long tail SEO, patio homes, condos, new construction, subdivisions, etc.).

I've been a regular blogger for a long time, but "regular" lately is the weekly AAA post here, not the daily creation of customer focused content.  I rely on the evergreen posts of years past to feed our Wordpress site and bring us potential clients.  But there's always an opportunity to create more evergreen posts.  New communities are out there, and will continue to be out there.  More web presence means more opportunities to catch eyes.

If you walk down your blog's memory lane, do you have evergreen posts lining the path back to you?

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Kick that engineering job to the curb and have real estate fun. I look over the old blogs every so often. Sometimes they jog a new idea out of me.

Ed, Even the real estate aspect will phase down as we move.  I'll refer out, but have no intent to license in our new state.  Being a dual career agent for 20 years is like dog years, it feels like 7 for every 1 :)

Hi Bill- it's been a long time coming but you've worked hard at it. I can remember your earlier blogs about local events. I still have fond memories of your rubber duck races. I'm hoping that with at least half of your dual career over, you'll write about your new adventure of relocating, especially relocating the hives!!b

the rubber duck regatta is one of the cooler local events!  And moving the beehives will be interesting :)

Hi Bill:

No doubt this is a transitional time filled with a broad range of emotions and lots of memories. You  must, in some ways, find it hard to realize that it is finally here, and yet at the same time welcome the life change. There is something to be said for leaving corporate life behind!

Jeff, it is definitely a mixed bag of feelings.  On one hand, nice to reach that milestone.  On the other hand, looking through my old stuff today and thinking about all the people who I worked with over the years (and how many of them have since passed) left a feeling of some sadness too.

I always look forward to hearing about what is going on in your world and it sounds like things are good.  I am sure there is some relief to be done with engineering, right?

Nov 20, 2024 03:53 AM

It's a bit mixed, I've liked the job and the people I work with are great, but it does simplify my life to not have to juggle so many things at one time.

Bill, the engineer in you will always be in you. That is who you are. And now with retirement officially about to begin your next chapter in life, you are already evaluating and assessing what needs to be done. I wish you the best as fruition is in progress and it won't be long before you'll be in your new home having new ideas and projects to do. I wish you all the very best.

Thanks!  Adjustments to be made and I need to figure out what I want to do and how.  As much as possible I want to strip out some of the things I've been doing, but don't enjoy, and replace with things I've been postponing.

When I decided to retire from my 30 year career in my corporate America job, the last day/week was still a bit sad for me. I drove to our headquarters to officially turn in the computer, ID badge, and say goodbye to a few people. I left with some sadness that a chapter of my life was over, but then I got in my car, headed out on the highway, and felt free as a bird with a world of possibilities in front of me. Here's hoping you turn in your stuff and feel free as well.

Today was definitely an emotional day for me (and some others).  Retirement lunch, final goodbyes, hand in my laptop and badge and drive away.  I'm going to miss those people, but the reality is once corporate life is over the contacts slow.  I'm looking forward to much of what I can do once we move.

Congradulations and wish you all the best.  When I was my son's today age I walked into my director office volunteered to take early retirement. He said you are kidding I thought you just turned late 30s.  Anyway, I moved on to so many different things and gigs enjoy every bit of do what one feels like doing. I personally know two engineers born in the late 1930s and early 1940 get early go to work because they enjoy working as engineers.  All the best to you.         Sam Shueh

Sam, Thanks!  I've had three major roles during my time with the company, each lasting about 10 years.  I've had a little business travel, a LOT of business travel, and none in my current role, and 600,000+ Skymiles to use some day.

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - a walk down Memory Lane of any sort is sure to be melancholic in some ways. Here's to all sorts of taking paths that are abuzz with a litter of new experiences.   Best of luck.

Definitely some melancholy.  When I look back at the people I worked with in my earliest years, many of them are no longer with us.  It's a reminder of what comes and to find time for what's important.

Hello Bill,

Retirement isn't giving up; it's taking charge of our journey. It's the chance to shift gears, leaving one path behind to pursue what truly moves us.

Personally, I may step back from real estate, but my passion for it will never fade. Focusing on new priorities, we embrace the freedom of our chosen way of life.

I sincerely wish you all the best.

Good evening Bill,

I can see you sifting through all the things you've accumulated in your cube and making that decision of what to toss! The unique house you are building is going to be exciting and can't wait to see the progress! The engineer in you will never vanish just used in some new ways. I'm sure it is bittersweet but good things are ahead for your and Liz!

Bittersweet for sure.  Very hard today to say goodbye to so many people I've worked with for years.  My company has been very good about hiring people that you WANT to work with, so I'm going to miss that aspect of my life.

I thought your last day was the end of the year, 12-31-2024.

Either way, you served the company for 33+ long years, as a loyal and dedicated employee. You certainly have a handle on real estate and blogging. There will likely be referral opportunities after you move to your newly built home.

I believe I speak on behalf of "most" AR members, we are happy that you are part of the platform.  All the best to you, Bill Liz and Bill Spear

Originally I expected through end of year, but the restructuring had an "everybody out of the pool November 22" date with no negotiating.  I finished up all my work due this year, and even some due in January before wrapping up today.

Thankful that many here appreciate my presence here :)

Home again, home again...

Congratulations!!  So you're waking up this morning, and going to go through your day completely disorganized without a care in the world?  Right?  Heck, you may not even starch your jeans this morning?

How does one turn off "engineer-mode" after all those years?

Nov 22, 2024 02:34 AM

I think that switch is welded to ON.
Friday was usually a work from home day, so the transition isn't as jarring as it might have been (so far).

I'll bet it's a nice clean weld, too.

Phil, we know we should have been blogging long before we actually started.  Fortunately the evergreen posts made good starting points for IDX pages, to the point I no longer know for sure if it was a blog post or the IDX page on our Wordpress site that caused the initial customer contact, but I'll take it either way.

Almost 2 weeks since I left the cube for the last time.  I'm missing some of the people, but not necessarily the work I did.  Plenty to fill the extra time so far.
