Miles, Memories, and Mulligans

By
Education & Training with Although I'm retired, I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals.

My family and friends no longer asked me how I am. They ask where I am.

There’s something therapeutic about a road trip. Unlike air travel, where the destination is the goal, road trips are about the entire journey, not just the destination. There's freedom of adventure along the way.

As I reflect on the years of buying new tires due to piling up the miles with golf clubs in the trunk, I realize how truly grateful I am for the ability and the desire to take on the open road alone. I suppose there will come a day when I won't be comfortable doing it, so I plan to travel while I can.

Road trips are soul-soothing. There is also danger in being left alone with my own thoughts for extended periods of time. LOL. There’s nothing like a stretch of highway to clear the mind, solve some problems, or catch up on some "reading" with a good audiobook as I enjoy the scenery. I also have a few conversations with my GPS when all it can tell me is to do a legal U-turn after I miss an exit or can't exit due to a construction closure. The built-in GPS's aren't programmed for construction closures. But, hey, some of those detours make for great discoveries and stories later. I've also come to count on the Waze app as a backup when I run into those situations.

Golfing across the country with new friends I've made along the way has been a delightful experience. I've met so many interesting and amazing people. And I’ve played courses with views so breathtaking that I don't even care whether I play well or not. Well, maybe that's not true, but if I am playing poorly, I am comforted knowing the 19th hole awaits my arrival.

It's really about the people, though. Road trips have allowed me to connect with family and friends and to make new friends scattered across the map. There’s nothing like sitting on a cousin’s porch or catching up with a new friend over dinner and an adult beverage to make you realize how fulfilling these relationships are.  It's been interesting to experience how one common interest (like golf or real estate) can make instant friends with someone you have never met.

So here’s to the open road... full of adventure, old connections, new friends, detours, and surprises. I’m grateful for every mile and every memory. After all, life isn’t just about the destination; it’s about the road you take to get there and the people you meet along the way.

This is my third entry into the November 2024 Gratitude Challenge hosted by Debe Maxwell, CRS

As I recall, you were recovering from back surgery so I appreciated that you made the special effort to organize the Aurora meet-up and get there yourself. It was a highlight of my trip. And, I haven't forgot you paid for my lunch, so I owe you a lunch on the next trip. 😊

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS
Getting to meet and spend time with you and Ray was definitely a highlight of the trip. I would love to come back sometime and do some golfing in the Charlotte area. Rumor has it, there are lots of great golf courses to choose from.  Vegas or Charlotte, it's always fun to see you and Ray.

Oh yes! Remember my pro golf client, Carol Williams? In an effort to get me to learn the game and meet more clients on the course, she shared her list of favorite courses with me too!

We still have water at our new place! Having an adult libation by the pool is just as relaxing to us since we left the lake. We miss our sunset boat rides but, are so very happy where we are now!

Not sure about a Vegas trip anytime soon but, you're always on our 'first-alert' list when we visit the area!

An adult beverage by the pool sounds just fine, Debe Maxwell, CRS! I do remember you saying you have a golf pro client. My back is better now so, hopefully, somedays I'll get back there to play some of those courses.

Hey Carol,

Isn’t it fun to think about the “secret” to getting that “adult beverage” at the 19th hole? Maybe some wise bartenders love to share their tasty concoctions and can spot the perfect mix of maturity and playfulness in your goofy, I mean, golfer friends!😂

Until then, we can enjoy being part of this wild and unpredictable world, drink in hand, and savor all the magic that comes with adulthood! Cheers!

Nov 20, 2024 05:44 PM

Hey Aura Alex
It's a good thing "maturity" isn't the requirement to getting an adult beverage. 😂  I love that graphic. Did you create it? I might want to borrow it sometime, with your permission.

So agree about being able to clear your head when taking road trips.  Back in NW IN, I drove 3 to 4 times to PA which was a 10 hour drive.  I had such clarity after each road trip.  Continue with safe travels and great games of golf!

Hi Carol,

I totally agree with your observations about road trips - I grew up in a small country, and the road trips, and train/bus trips were part of our vacations. Detours are very easy, when half of the roads were not freeways.

Those golf courses make you look and feel more and more youthful - great photos you have included in your blog!

Hi Steffy Hristova
Maybe when I don't want to drive anymore, I can start doing train and/or bus trips. Then I'll really get to see the country and not have to worry about traffic. 😊

Carol Williams - What a delightful reading today about your epic road trips. Changing directions, the channels on your radio or in your mind, driving on new lanes, experiencing different time zones, and seeing beautiful scenery is a beautiful way to live more fully. But the best part is obviously when you stop and visit with friends, and you have done that continuously. You have made the best of your life and there is still a lot more to do! I wish you happy road trips and more visits with those you cherish.
