The Great Thanksgiving Day Pie Divide: Pie Favorites, State By State

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty 179530

WHAT'S YOUR STATE'S FAVORITE THANKSGIVING DAY PIE?

"Pie makes everybody happy."

... Laurie Halse Anderson

When it comes to Thanksgiving pies, different states have their own unique takes on this beloved dessert. From the classic pumpkin pie to the pecan pies to apple pies,  pie preferences across the USA are as diverse as the landscapes themselves. Some states lean into local flavors like key lime or cherry, while others stick to staples like apple or sweet potato. And then there are those states who like their cream pies, peanut butter pies, buttermilk pies, even a grape pie. Whether your state’s signature slice is sweet, tart, or decadently nutty, there’s no denying that pie is the universal language of Thanksgiving celebration.

"If you think of life as like a big pie, you can try to hold the whole pie and kill yourself trying to keep it, or you can slice it up and give some to the people around you, and you still have plenty left for yourself."

... Jay Leno

Do you have a favorite pie for Thanksgiving dinner? Is it the same as the favorite pie in your state?

"Cut my pie into four pieces, I don’t think I could eat eight."

... Yogi Berra

TasteofHome.com just shared a map of American's favorite pies from a survey by GE Appliances of 1,555 people:

Google Trends, meantime, provided the map below showing a different list of favorite pies by state based on unique web searches in the past 30 days.

"Pies were invented 12,000 years ago by the Egyptians. It was an easy way to preserve food that would be carried over long distances. They were like ancient Slim Jims."

... Craig Ferguson

Whatever pie you're planning on enjoying this Thanksgiving, wishing you the happiest and tastiest of Thanksgivings! And remember, life is short... eat dessert first!

Good morning, Nina.
I love many kinds of pies, but Thanksgiving is one of the few times I indulge. When I spent the holidays at home we always had a pumpkin pie from Costco, with lots of whipped cream. I was surprised to see Blackberry Pie as the favorite for Washington, although that is a great choice. A good apple pie is right up there, too, of course.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving week!

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker
The odd thing is, I didn't like pumpkin pie when I was a kid. I was a mincemeat pie girl. Now I love pumpkin but ONLY with the whipped cream. I'm not even sure mincemeat pie is even a thing anymore.

Carol Williams good morning, Carol... I did not grow up with "American" pies, so I'd be like "double helping of whipped cream please and hold the pie." :))) I don't think I even ever tried pumpkin pie until I was an adult.

Carol Williams hi Carol... that's the purpose of the whipped cream... to hide the taste of pumpkin pie! :))) I don't consider things like mincemeat a dessert.

Interesting! I'm not a big pie fan. Growing up, my mom would make pecan and mincemeat pies. Sometimes pumpkin. I'll have to ask the couples I'm having Thanksgiving dinner what their favorites are to see if this map is correct!

Kat Palmiotti good morning, Kat... I'm not a big pie fan either, unless it's cherry or key lime). I always find these kinds of reports interesting and they always add to a conversation.

Hi Kat Palmiotti
I loved mincemeat pie when I was a kid. Maybe because it had apples and raisins in it. I've always been an apple girl, even before I moved to the Apple Capital of the World. I guess Wenatchee was my destiny. LOL  Can you even get mincemeat pie anymore?

Hello Nina - once again I ask, did someone say pie

Although the Thanksgiving Day food festivities may be centered around the turkey, it's the side dishes and the desserts that often create many oohs and aahs.  And getting a piece of that pie or this one is a game of choice where participating can be downright delectable as well as debatable.  Happy Thanksgiving Week.

Michael Jacobs hi Michael... I keep hearing that most people like all the side dishes and the pies better than the turkey. And I'm just the opposite, I'm all about the turkey (and maybe a bit of sweet potatoes).

I remember every Thanksgiving my brother-in-law would bring a pumpkin pie to our Thanksgiving dinner. He constantly said "who doesn't like pumpkin pie?" Well, as it turns out I wasn't the only one that didn't agree and only 1 slice was ever cut!

I like a pecan pie, but also mince pie made with candied fruits, in England we have them for Xmas and they are usually individual ones. I made them for the first time last year and was very happy with the result.

Hi Nina= pecan pie is very big here and I love it. I've made a chocolate pecan pie as well. But I also love apple pie and chocolate cream pie!!! My grandmother made them all. I'm hungry now.

Nov 25, 2024 12:20 PM

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... I suppose because pies like this were not something I grew up with, I really never developed a taste for them. If it's a French tatin, that's a whole other story. But when I look at pies and think about the calories, I always feel I'd rather spend my calories elsewhere.

Nina, this is a fun post to read.

I was surprised to see that AZ was listed as a grape pie - most of the pies I see in stores and in bakeries in AZ are pumpkin, apple, pecan. I have never seen in the Phoenix metro grape pies. :)

Nov 25, 2024 07:03 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Steffy Hristova I saw that as well, Steffy, and have never seen a grape pie. That being said, NC is all about buttermilk pies... I've never seen one or tasted one. Then again, maybe we can't assume that Phoenix and Charlotte are representative of the entire states.

I can't remember if I had pumpkin pie last year, but I won't be having it this year, haha.  I was told that the seeds and skin have too much lectin in them, which is apparently not good for us, haha.
