Sharing Our Gratitude and Giving to Food Banks

I know this time of year we are all stopping and feeling grateful for everything in our lives: family, friends, shelter, food, transportation...so much! It shouldn't be just this time of year to give to people less fortunate than ourselves, sadly it usually is and I have a short list of things generally needed

  • Canned goods with pop tops(people may not have can openers)
  • Boxed milk is often overlooked and many receive cereal with nothing to put on it
  • Vegetable oil for cooking rice dishes, etc.
  • Salt and pepper
  • Sugar and flour
  • Tea bags and/or instant coffee
  • Tuna and crackers
  • Peanut butter, jelly, and don't forget the bread
  • Boxed dinners...Rice a Roni, Stove top dressing...

I am posting because I have given canned goods without thought of a can opener, cereal without milk, and peanut butter without bread.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Dorothy, A good reminder about thinking/giving to those in need. And good thoughts about what we give to food banks.  Makes a lot of sense to give items that are coupled with an item to make it easier to use.  I will be sure to give cans that do not need a can opener. Happy Thanksgiving to you.

I know it can break your heart and it shows us how very fortunate we are in our own lives.

Dorothy Griggs this is a time of the year that food banks get a lot of requests.  It is easy and painless to pick-up a few extra cans of food when shopping and make a donation.

Hi Dorothy- the thought of anyone going hungry...especially in our country...pains me. Our local chain grocery store has a big barrel for people to leave food donations!

That is wonderful and it makes shoppers easily be able to give food items, thank you for sharing.
