Battle of the States - When It Comes to Moving

By
Real Estate Agent with DFW FINE PROPERTIES 0506509

As of November 2024, Texans prefer to stay in Texas rather than move out of Texas. In 2023, about 3,356,000 people moved from one place in Texas to another without leaving the Lone State. This equates to both the highest percentage and the highest number of people in a U.S. state who moved within the state.

WHY DO PEOPLE PREFER TO LIVE IN TEXAS

"Texas is a great place to live," said Jef Conn, Chairman of Texas REALTORS®. What's so attractive about Texas? There are a wide variety of locations, a thriving economy, and many find Texas is where you get quality of life.

MOVING TO TEXAS

Texas remains a popular destination for Jobs, Corporations, Schools, and People moving from out of State. Overall, in the U.S. moves were slightly down, moves to Texas held steady at 8.1% of all relocations between states for the second year in a row. However, Florida had a higher share of state-to-state moves with 8.4%. In comparison to California, Texas was well ahead of third-place (5.6%) and fourth-place North Carolina (4.5%).

COMPETITION FOR TRADE-OFFS

California was the top state Texans moved to and came from. However, a significantly higher number of people moved from California to Texas, yielding a net gain for Texas of more than 55,000 new residents in 2023. This represents the highest net gain from any state, followed by Florida who had the second-highest number of movers exchanged with Texas, adding a net total of ~13,000 people to the State of Texas' population. The top states responsible for a net loss of Texans were Colorado and North Carolina.

TEXAS KEEPS GETTING BIGGER AND BIGGER

In 2023, Texas had a net gain of more than 133,000 residents from state-to-state moves. Texas REALTORS® are advocates for private property rights in Texas.

The Texas Relocation Report is based on data from the migration estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.

Kat Palmiotti - thank you. Anyone moving to Texas should learn what they can expect and understand the geographical layouts, climate conditions, and much more.

Enjoy your day!

Good morning, Patricia... North and South Carolina are also net in-migration states. But I don't think we have that many people from California. We get them from the mid-west and from the mid-Atlantic.  As a California escapee, myself, many years ago... I'm quite happy we don't have that influence moving here.  :) We actually do have lots of people who move here from Texas... I've worked with my share of people who've moved here from Texas.

Texas is indeed receiving lots of CA citizens many in the health care industry. Kingman AZ has considerable retirees and many have come from CA.

Good afternoon Patricia,

An interesting post with data coming from  the migration estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey. I agree with Leanne Smith Texas is receiving lots of CA citizens many in the health care industry.

This is good information to share with families considering a move to the area. Several of our friends have moved to Texas and we also have family in Texas (A nephew and his family).

Enjoy this holiday weekend!

Lew Corcoran - My advice to people who receive relocation assistance from their employers is to learn what to expect about Texas because if they don't, they don't want to be blind sighted after their first year in TX. Speaking for myself, I knew nothing about the State of TX while the relocation was going on. My focus was on learning my new job and responsibilities. I was glad I rented for a year before I bought to know and understand the geographic landscape and the differences from where I came from to where I now resided.

Have a nice day.

Patricia I am surprised that the number of people leaving California isn't much higher than that.

George Souto - my focus was mainly on North Texas. If I learn more, I'll write another post.

I do know that when Toyota Headquarters moved to Texas a few years ago, it made housing and new construction very scarce and expensive to locals but not Californians!
