Moments in the Journey: A Reflection on Growth and Impact

Sometimes, life surprises you with a moment so profound it reminds you why you do what you do.
Thirteen years ago, a girl walked through the doors of Power Martial Arts. She had so much potential, but life was pulling her in all directions. Little did she know, she was looking for more than just a place to train – she sought guidance, stability, and encouragement to help her grow.
My husband and I poured our hearts into her, as we did with all our students for a decade. This school wasn’t just about martial arts; it was about family, about cultivating strength not just in the body but in the mind and spirit. We watched her grow, her confidence blooming with each lesson, each triumph.
Then, life carried her away, as it does for so many of our students. Nearly 10 yrs have passed with no real connection and we often wondered how she was doing.
Yesterday, I saw a young couple walking hand in hand down Abbott Blvd. To my surprise, the young woman waved at me—it was her! Unexpectedly, she stopped to say hello. My heart nearly stopped; it had been so long, yet the recognition was instant.
Seeing the woman she’s become, the grace and maturity she now carries, brought tears to my eyes. The young girl who once sought direction now radiates self-assurance, a testament to the power of community, care, and hard work.
Power Martial Arts was always more than just a school. It was a place where lives were shaped, where potential was nurtured, and where bonds of family were forged. At a recent seminar, a speaker challenged us to not just do what we love but to love what we do. Moments like these—seeing a former student thriving and knowing we played a part in her journey—are the perfect manifestations of that love. They remind me why we dedicated ourselves so completely to this work.
It makes me wonder: where will today's steps take me in this journey?
My heart is full.

Hello Elisa - what a powerful message.  People don't always know the roles they play in the lives of others.  To me, this example shows that.

Carol Williams - a SCS Second Chance Saturday post suggestion.  I believe a bigger audience would appreciate it.

Kat Palmiotti - while I have never considered it a race, you have often beaten me when it comes to identifying SCS-worthy post considerations.
