Grateful for Community Garden in the Neighborhood
The garden is one of the focal points in the neighborhood, and my happy place, too.
My trips to our local vegetable garden is something that I treasure and love very much They often turn into a photo walk around the raised garden boxes - there is such a variety and wonder walking among them - vegetables and fruit for our tables, beautiful roses and flowers for the pollinators.
I am so grateful to a local church that parsed off a portion of the parking lot and turned it into a community garden and a sand volleyball field - both are very well used and appreciated. The garden is one of the focal points in the neighborhood, and my happy place, too.
Thanks to our knowledgeable and enthusiastic garden coordinator, members meet at a certain time once a week - it's a great time to exchange ideas what to plant, what has worked in previous years and just fun to meet other gardeners. Some of them are Master Gardeners with many years of experience growing food and flowers in the Arizona climate.
This year my particular point of pride were the watermelon radishes, that are on the featured photo of the blog, the heirloom tomatoes and the sweet watermelon.
Some of the tomatoes were transplants, started from one of the Master gardeners, and others were started by me from seeds I had collected or purchased.
Urban Farmer Steffy harvests the cherry tomatoes that grow so well in the Arizona climate.
An unknown researcher had a scientific discovery recently, which I am publishing here, too.
Friends from the garden invited me to visit their personal orchards and gardens, and thanks to them, we ate the most flavorful and juicy fruit this year. The peaches on the photo below comprised a fruit diet day for me this June. Blissful taste!
Those heirloom tomatoes were so well-hidden between the greenery that I almost missed them, and the birds for sure had not seen them. They were some of the tastiest sun-ripened tomatoes.
The watermelons were also another surprise in 2024 - they survived some of the July scorching temperatures and were super juicy and sweet.
The garden is within walking distance for several Tempe subdivisions, and it makes a nice walk, too.
It is also a place that I love to show to Buyers who are looking to make this neighborhood a place for their home.
This is my second entry for Debe Maxwell, CRS 's Thankful Thoughts: ActiveRain's November 2024 Gratitude Challenge.
