Archaeologists Work with Indigenous Peoples

Photo of arrowhead in a plastic bag

Before John Smith arrived and even before the glaciers melted to create the Chesapeake Bay, Indigenous Peoples had called the land that is now Maryland home.

Indigenous sites in Maryland have been dated as early as 12,000 years ago by archaeologists.

Thanks to state and federal grants, a growing relationship with today’s Piscataway descendants, and a strong partnership with Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources, archaeologists and students have been working to uncover the history of Indigenous Peoples in Southern Maryland. Read more.

This is a Maryland Department of Natural Resources article.

It is quite interesting to read about the native people (who actually traveled here from other continents) who roamed the lands of this great country. It must have been an amazing sight before all the roads and buildings.

Hi Roy- how wonderful to be involved in something like this!!!  I know very little about the indigenous people who were here before us.

When I was a kid, I grew up in a home built in 1905.  One day I was digging out in the backyard and came up with a shale arrowhead.  The arrowhead disappeared before I completely grew up, but I always wondered about its history.
