December 2024 AR Challenge

By
Industry Observer 0506509

For this month of December, Carol Williams and Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 are hosting a Holiday Gift Challenge that will hopefully spark some ideas that can benefit others. For my part, I chose Option 1:

1. Suggest Your Best Gift Idea:
Do you have a go-to gift for people who already have it all? Maybe it’s something personalized, a unique experience, or a thoughtful handmade item. Please share your idea(s), and help us all make this holiday season memorable!

I learned long ago; some people appear to have it all, while others don't really have anything to give. What I practice is celebrating the spirit of giving year-round with unexpected thoughtful ways to spread cheer to the people who mean the most to me any time or day of the year. I learned long ago, it's more important to give than receive without waiting for a calendar date or feeling pressured by marketing schemes tantalizing me to stop, shop, and buy now before the 25th of December.

When it comes to this time of year, I don't expect to buy gifts or to receive anything in return. What I give is unexpected year-round thoughtfulness, from the heart. It could be as simple as a notecard, or something I saw that I wanted someone else to have, as a reminder of how grateful I am because they came into my life. My words to them, are always enough and it never fails, they respond with appreciation for my thoughtfulness.

When it comes to following traditions, I concentrate on life lessons, knowing no one is exempt from harsh realities. I never want to make someone feel uncomfortable around the holidays. One never knows what someone is really going through. Everyone has some type of fear, including worrying about holiday gift giving when budgets are tight, sickness, memories of people who left this world, experiencing or recovering from natural disasters, feelings of rejections from not getting approved for a mortgage loan, not getting that home you dreamt about, children facing homelessness, bullying, and feelings of not being heard or accepted.

Rather than participate in gift exchanges, I concentrate on what loving things I can I do to put a smile on someone's face year-round, without any obligations for getting something back in return.

Respectfully submitted for the December 2024 Challenge.

Hello Patricia - I believe creative gift-giving whenever it occurs includes thoughtfulness.  And it's always time in my opinion, to consider that option.  Maybe in the "present".

Michael Jacobs - it is better to give than receive and what better ways to show you care than when something is delivered. Creative gift-giving comes in many forms, including communication. Ready or not, it is easy to remember others when its least expected or there is no obligation.

Hi Patricia,
Your post is right on. It reminds me of the quote by Helen Steiner Rice:
"Peace on Earth will come to stay, when we live Christmas every day."

Regardless of our religion, how wonderful it would be to keep the spirit of the season alive all year.

Thank you for sharing your year around spirit with us.

Carol Williams - until this morning, I forgot all about that wonderful quote by Helen Steiner Rice. However, I never forgot the concept. My last closing was November 2023, and I sent something special to the Seller/Buyer. Even though I got that person a closing gift, I remember her and the things that were dear to her. She communicated back with gratitude and expressed the surprise and how much it meant to her to be remembered when she least expected.

Keeping the spirt alive year-round is a blessing.

Love it! You're right, many people feel stressed around the holidays because they feel an obligation to give a gift to everyone who gives to them and sometimes they can't. Giving year round when the feeling hits is a great way to let people know you care about them - and that's what the "Christmas" spirit is all about - love.

Kat Palmiotti - Inflation has hit hard on many people these past few years. Being cognizant of other people's feelings is an attitude of gratitude than needs to circulate. There really is something to be grateful for and it doesn't have to be marked on a calendar date. I recall a lecture I heard a very long time ago when I lived outside of Texas. The most important part of the message that resonated loud and clear was no man is an island.

And so, for the love of people that came into my life, I continue to remember the cycle of living with the true Christmas spirit because love is the greatest gift of all.

Good morning Patricia. My dad took great pride in giving to others and watching their reaction without expecting anything in return. If it made them happy, he considered the his gift. He was special. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - your dad must have been wonderful. He knew it is better to give than to receive, and that's what gave him pleasure, that isn't a knee jerk reaction, but a loving one instead. May loving memories of your dad about how he lived remain with you always.

I wish you happiness daily.

Good morning, Patricia... thoughtfulness and kindness are gifts that know no boundaries in terms of holidays. Those are gifts we can give every day of the year. I also believe that just like it's important for us to accept help when offered, we should gratefully accept gifts when offered from the heart. For the giver acceptance is a gift back.

Nina Hollander, Broker - It appears to me that all the places you lived gave you more reasons to understand people as a whole, and not just because they are locals or referrals. Truer words were never spoken loud enough. When holidays are around (or not), "thoughtfulness and kindness are gifts that know no boundaries."

Thank you for your warmth and wisdom year-round.

Good morning Patricia,

I love your entry. Thoughtfulness and kindness are gifts that are appreciated when ever received. It's always good to express this rather than get stressed out at holidays over perceived obligations to produce a gift. I love buying my grandchildren gifts so do try and come up with things they would like..that's just me!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - You are blessed with many grandchildren. I only have one and you betcha I send many unexpected gifts from my heart to her often. When it comes to something to a child as Christmas, never be selfish, is my model.

To me, I find listening, really listening to the needs of others, stays with me and bounces back to them in unexpected ways. For example, my granddaughter has a summer birthday. Once she expressed to me how she wished she could have been born during a school calendar year. I asked why? She said because in school, our teachers have the entire class remember the birthday child. When I heard that, I started sending her a 1/2 birthday gift to remind her she is loved.

Hi Patricia- your words are treasured. When you give of your time and from the heart, you are giving something that has no pricetag and never goes out of style. My mother tried to find gifts for others that they could use or wanted but would not think to buy for themselves.

Kathy Streib - thank you for your sweet comment. I received warm fuzzies! Gifts from the heart seems to hit a home run and can become treasures.

Your mother sounds like she was never selfish; always thoughtful and kind.
