Do The Right Thing In Real Estate, Even If It Costs You Money

Last week I had a person reach out who was starting to search for a home around Destin Florida. After a few quick questions over the phone, we met at the office to go over their needs in detail. So far so good...

The in office meeting went well and we got all the BBA paperwork inked. Now the work begins! We researched some homes and soon it became clear we needed to expand the search area to find their perfect home. Did I mention this was a cash, close before Santa comes down the fireplace  situation???

It became clear that his needs/budget was better served in an area 2 hours away and in a different MLS. The temptation was to load up the Jeep and head to the promised land. Why didn't I do just that? I didn't know the market well enough to service the client.

How lacking was my market knowledge you ask? I had never heard of the town where the home was listed. When you have to ask Siri for coordinates it's time to refer to a local professional. And that's what I Did...

Did it "cost" me money to do the right thing? Perhaps. But my buyer will be well cared for by Travis Sykes (850) 570-4212 with Hometown Realty. If you have referrals near Tallahassee send them his way! By doing the right thing I now have an awesome referral partner to my East. I can send him stuff (and he send deals my way) for the next twenty years. Sounds like a profitable deal to me!

Got a buyer or seller referral for Destin Florida? Send them my way, you know I will do the right thing! If it's outside my service area I will help you find a professional free of charge! Good morning, Doug... you did the absolutely right thing to ensure your client got the best service and advice. I, too, would rather get a referral fee than aim for the entire commission and not service a client the way they should be. This will come back to you in time in spades... short term, you gave up some money; long term you'll see it back.

Hello Doug - such decisions are a part of life as a real estate practitioner.  You took the professional route, while I am no longer active in the business, I have "seen" situations where agents are practicing outside their area of knowledge.   It's a case where such practice is truly not "perfect".  Happy Wednesday.

It is never wrong to do the right thing. I referred the friend of a client who had a house to sell last year to a local agent, who did a great job, even when there were hiccups in the sale. Maybe I did not make as much as i could have if I had listed, but they were on the spot and knew the market. My client was served and was happy at the end.

Good afternoon Doug Rogers and by doing the right thing you elevated this profession. I firmly believe in staying in one's own lane for the reasons you cited.  Active Rain provides opportunities to know other agents and make sound referrals.

Doug- I will echo what the others said...you did the absolute right thing that all true professionals should do. And, as Leanne Smith said you also elevated the profession. Your were not short sighted in your choice but rather opened the door for many future referrals.

I agree that you made a good decision, Doug Rogers. You put the good of the client ahead of your personal gain. You have gained a new friend at the other end of the transaction who may refer a future opportunity to you. You have served the client well by positioning the client in the best situation to meet their needs.

Good for you for not only doing the right thing but posting about it, too, Doug! These are stories the public doesn't hear (often enough) but needs to. You demonstrate value when you recognize that you cannot service the client the way they deserve!
