Use Solar Power to Decorate Your Home During the Holidays

By

I spent Thanksgiving with my son and his boys in Connecticut.  His girlfriend/partner embodies all the best features of Martha Stewart and their home is beautifully decorated with candles in very window, two Christmas trees and wreathes with lights everywhere - on the gates to the driveway, on the fence to the back yard and seemingly every window too.

I hadn't even ordered my outdoor lights yet so I came home feeling rather ashamed of my slow poke attitude toward Christmas decorating.  I thought that maybe I could get Rudolf to cast a glow over my home with his red nose but I do understand that he is busy this time of the year.  Instead, I went to Amazon to see what I needed to buy and decided to try to go solar this year as much as possible because I am tired of looking for batteries in that kitchen junk drawer that we all have.

Using solar power to decorate your home at Christmas is an eco-friendly and cost-effective way to embrace the holiday spirit. Here's how to do it effectively:

1. Choose Solar-Powered Decorations

      • Solar String Lights: These are widely available in various colors and styles. They charge during the day and automatically light up at night.
      • Solar Pathway Lights: Perfect for illuminating walkways, driveways, or garden features.
      • Solar Figurines or Ornaments: Many holiday-themed solar decorations, such as Santa, reindeer, or snowflakes, are available for outdoor display.

2. Place Solar Panels in Optimal Locations

  • Full Sunlight Exposure: Position solar panels in areas that get direct sunlight for most of the day. Ensure they're not shaded by trees, buildings, or decorations.
  • South-Facing Orientation: In the northern hemisphere, aim the panels south for maximum sun exposure.
  • Adjustable Panels: Look for solar lights with adjustable panels so you can tilt them toward the sun's angle.

3. Prepare the Area for Setup

  • Clean the Panels: Dust and debris can reduce efficiency. Wipe solar panels clean before installation.
  • Secure Decorations: Use hooks, clips, or ties to ensure your lights and panels stay in place during wind or rain.

4. Use Solar Lights Strategically

  • Highlight Key Areas: Focus on decorating areas like the front porch, windows, pathways, and trees.
  • Cluster for Impact: Group solar-powered ornaments together for a more striking effect.
  • Layer Lighting: Combine solar string lights with reflective ornaments to enhance the brightness.

5. Extend Battery Life

  • Turn Off During Cloudy Days: If the weather is consistently overcast, turn off the lights for a day to recharge fully.
  • Use a Manual Switch: Some solar lights allow you to turn them off to conserve battery power for specific occasions.

6. Mix Solar with Non-Lit Decorations

  • Reflective Materials: Incorporate shiny ornaments, metallic tinsel, and mirrored surfaces to amplify the light.
  • Natural Elements: Decorate with wreaths, pinecones, or garlands that don’t require electricity.

7. Consider Backup Options

  • Rechargeable Batteries: Some solar decorations allow for battery replacement or charging via USB for days when sunlight is insufficient.
  • Hybrid Solar Lights: These can be charged via solar power or plugged in as needed.

Benefits of Solar Christmas Decorations

  • Energy Savings: They don’t add to your electricity bill.
  • Eco-Friendly: Reduce your carbon footprint during the holidays.
  • Low Maintenance: Once set up, solar decorations are self-sufficient.

Amazon promises me that with proper planning and placement, solar-powered decorations can make your home festive while being kind to the environment and your wallet.  I will let you know after I set everything up!

Good morning, Lise... great advice and great information about getting the most out of solar lighting. Not doing much this year in terms of lighting as we'll be away at Christmas. But I'll look further into it next year.

Nina Hollander, Broker   we will be away for Christmas so I am not putting up a tree this year. It doesn’t bring me he joy that the outside lights and the candles in the window so. I also ordered a solar lit Christmas wreath.  I’m so tired of batteries

Lise Howe hi Lise... I think I'm just the opposite. I figure I lived inside my house so I want to see all the decorations where I live. We will also be away Christmas week, but my house is fully done for Christmas. The only difference is I've put up just one tree instead my usual three trees... and even that had more to do with my physical strength after my hip replacements than the fact that we will be away for six days.

Will Hamm - It was wonderful to see Alex and the boys - we are heading up to Nantucket for Christmas with Alex, my daughter and her husband and her in-laws.  I just bought a tree to take with us!

Hi Lise- I'd not thought of solar Christmas lights!!! Our two outdoor security cameras are solar powered. Indoors, I have battery-operated candles which I love and use rechargeable batteries for those. I may look into the solar wreath.

Kathy Streib - I just ordered Christmas candles for the windows that are solar powered - I am SO over changing the batteries when they die!

Lise- I started using rechargeable batteries, but I agree, it gets tiresome.
