Setting the Standard: Even During the Holidays

The holiday season is a busy time for everyone, but it’s no excuse to let professionalism slip. Recently, I received this email (details have been slightly altered to protect identities). It’s a prime example of what not to do as a real estate agent, no matter how experienced or pressed for time you are.

The email dives straight into the tenant’s financial and personal details, accompanied by attached documents—credit scores, paystubs, tax returns—without any context or prior discussion. It ends with an urgent request for a decision before scheduling a showing.

When I followed up with a voice call, the agent was adamant about receiving an answer first, citing it as a “waste of time” otherwise. I respectfully shared that it’s her choice to conduct business that way—but it’s certainly not how I’d approach this situation.

What Went Wrong?
1. No Context or Courtesy:
The email lacked an introduction or explanation, making the recipient feel like a means to an end rather than a valued professional.

2. Misplaced Urgency:
Insisting on a decision before providing full context or taking a basic step like scheduling a showing shifts unnecessary responsibility onto others.

3. Transactional Over Relational:
Real estate thrives on trust and collaboration. A transactional, impersonal tone not only undermines the interaction but can harm your professional reputation.

4. Missed Opportunity to Shine:
Every email or call is a chance to showcase your professionalism. Failing to do so leaves a negative impression that’s difficult to overcome.

Why It Matters
Even during the holiday rush, it’s important to prioritize professionalism and maintain high standards. The holidays aren’t just about closing deals—they’re about reflecting on how we show up in every interaction. A careless or rushed approach might save time in the moment but risks damaging relationships and trust in the long run.

A Note for Renters and Landlords
For Renters: if you’re looking to rent or buy, don’t settle for an agent who treats you like a checklist or rushes through the process. A good agent takes the time to understand your needs and guides you with respect and care.

For landlords: choosing the right agent to represent you is crucial. Look for someone who upholds professionalism in all their interactions—your reputation is tied to theirs. An agent who prioritizes thoughtful communication and relationship-building will ultimately attract better-qualified tenants and foster smoother transactions.

Let’s use this season as a reminder to stay intentional and thoughtful. Set the bar high for yourself, your clients, and your colleagues. In the end, it’s not just about the transactions we complete—it’s about the relationships we build and the example we set for our industry.

Good morning Elisa. The agent who took her approach would not have fared well with the units over which I was the asset manager. Seek first to understand then to be understood. You can't do it backwards and expect good results. Enjoy your day.
